Lego Reveals Near-2,000-Piece TIE Interceptor Set Releasing On Star Wars Day

Star Wars and Lego have been working together for 25 years, and they've already done a lot to mark the occasion. However, the pair has been sitting on their biggest reveal of all until today, confirming that a new near-2,000 piece Lego Star Wars set inspired by one of the first ever released almost a quarter of a century ago is coming in time for May 4. A Lego TIE Interceptor, based on the design of the ships tasked with protecting the Death Star in Return of the Jedi.
When you look at the TIE Interceptor, whether in Lego form or the real deal in a Star Wars movie, you hear the unmistakable sound it makes as it tears through space. Lego decided to have a little fun with that for the set's reveal by having some of its employees try to replicate the sound, holding the set for inspiration. None of them nails it, but having tried it myself, now and countless times over the years, I can confirm it's harder to mimic than you think.
Noted by StarWars.com, the iconic TIE Interceptor was first immortalized in Lego in 2000, a part of the Ultimate Collector Series. Henrik Andersen, a designer master at Lego who worked on the OG Lego TIE Interceptor as well as the new one releasing next month, noted that advances in Lego mean the newer model is an almost near-perfect replica of the model used in the movies. Lego Insiders will be able to buy the set at the Lego Store from May 1, and the set will go on general sale from May 4.
That date is significant because it is, of course, Star Wars Day. The same day that several other sets hit the Lego Store, including one that adds a very tiny Grogu Minifigure to the Lego Star Wars collection. The TIE Interceptor will also bring two new Minifigures into the fold - a TIE Pilot and an Imperial Mouse Droid. The set itself will be made up of 1,931 pieces and will cost $229.99.
Lego has been ramping up to Star Wars day, revealing two batches of sets and now adding its TIE Interceptor into the mix. There will likely be more to come between now and May 4 too, and potentially even more after since the pair's anniversary year doesn't end with Star Wars Day. Outside of Star Wars, there's still hope Lego will get its very first Legend of Zelda set later this year, although neither Lego nor Nintendo has confirmed that.
