In case you'd forgotten, EA and its studio Cliffhanger Games is working on a Black Panther game. The announcement was one of those that's more of a recruitment drive than anything else, so it's likely still years away from release. In fact, the team is still growing; interestingly, one recent job opening confirms the game's structure will be that of an open world title.
We already knew this Black Panther game will be a third-person, single-player action adventure, and now we can safely say it's an open world one. The job listing is for a Principal Sandbox Designer, tasked with «designing and populating encounters, systems, and gameplay within a dynamic and evolving open world». Not a lot of room for interpretation there.
Back before the game was announced, Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb said it would be an open world experience. He also said the project is being led by Kevin Stephens, which has also turned out to be true. Stephens served as VP and studio head of Monolith Productions, known for open world titles Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, and is now VP and Studio GM at Cliffhanger.
This game is not to be confused with Skydance's Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which focuses on Black Panther as well as Captain America.
Are you excited about an open world Black Panther game? Let us know in the comments section below.
Stephen has been part of the Push Square team for over six years, bringing boundless enthusiasm and a deep knowledge of video games to his role as Assistant Editor. Having grown up playing every PlayStation console to date, he's developed an eclectic taste, with particular passion for indie games, arcade racers, and puzzlers. He's also our go-to guy for Sonic-related matters, much to his delight/chagrin.
More Marvel and now open world, pass.
I think with Marvel games I'm good with whatever Insomniac cooks up. Spidey 3, Wolverine and that X-Men game they're doing would excite me, but everything else I can skip.
All these Marvel games in development and it seems we may go through this whole generation without a good DC game…
@jFug Or a good Marvel game?...
Da Dun Tss
(I jest of course. I legit loved Spidey 2.)
Ugh. This is why big budget western games suck now. Marvel, open world, Marvel, Star Wars, open world, etc.
Its just so boring! Thank god for the Japanese devs, they've been bringing it this gen.
Part of the fun of Spider-Man was the feel of swinging from building to building.
Black Panther has a real boring move-set for an open world game. Should have gone the Anthem route with Iron Man imo.
Black Panther? Give me Black Cougar, cowards.

@Ichiban Open world is fine IF you put in the work. Procedurally generated content sucks.
