The now features password-free sign-in thanks to the new Passkey system. Players can enable this new feature for easier logins to their PlayStation Network accounts, replacing clunky old passwords with simpler solutions such as biometric sign-ins and PINs. At the same time, Sony also makes the case that passkeys are more secure, making it harder for malicious third parties to access your account information.
Before you start setting up passkeys, it’s important to note that you can always stick to using a password and two-factor authentication, and you can always switch back afterward. Setting up a PS5 can be difficult enough, so if you prefer to continue using a tried and tested sign-in method, then it’s always available to you. However, if you’re interested to try out a passkey, you can easily set one up.
To setup a passkey, head over to the official PlayStation website and sign-in on the top right of the screen using your sign-in ID and password. From there, select the Security tab under Account. This will redirect you to a security settings page. This page allows you to change lots of different security settings, including setting up two-factor authentication, setting a backup phone number, and more.
You should see a small section named “Sign In with Passkey” which should be deactivated if you haven’t yet used the feature. Click Edit to open a small pop menu. This lets you create a passkey.
At this point, you’ll be given options about where to save your passkey:
This essentially gives you options for using a PIN, scanning a QR code, or using the biometric sign-ins available on your mobile device. From there, just follow the instructions to complete passkey setup. The next time you sign in, you’ll be prompted to use your passkey; your password and any 2FA will be deactivated since they’re no longer needed.
If you have the PlayStation App on your mobile device, you may be prompted to approve sign-in via the app.
You can follow the same steps to set up more than one passkey, in case you prefer having multiple options for signing in.
If you prefer to switch back to using a password, sign back into your account and select the Security tab again. You can then edit and deactivate passkeys under the “Sign In with Passkey” section. If you do this, you’ll be asked to set up a new password. You may need to sign-in again on other devices before you can tweak your account settings or buy 2024’s best PS5 games off the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation Support should be able to help you resolve any issues.
Regardless of how you choose to sign-in, it’s always worth double-checking your security settings. Sony provides lots of different options to help you make your and PlayStation Network accounts as secure as
