Hogwarts Legacy Tops First UK Physical Sales Charts for 2024

Bandai Namco’s fighting sequel, Tekken 8, has debuted at the top of this week’s UK boxed charts.

Hogwarts Legacy has now sold 24 million copies since its release in February last year, publisher Warner Bros. has said.

The best-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, has sold over 24 million units to date. The news came from Variety, which also outlined the ambitious plan Warner Bros. Discovery has for growth in the gaming space. The company values Harry Potter (the IP behind Hogwarts Legacy), Mortal Kombat (which has sold three million units since its debut last September), DC, and Game of Thrones franchises $1 billion each for their gaming potential, and it plans to capitalize on them all.

Remember the PlayStation-exclusive content for Hogwarts Legacy that was available when the game launched in February 2023? It’s finally coming to other platforms later this Summer, per the official Twitter. There will also be additional “updates and features”, and players should stay tuned for more details this year.

Today, the developers have revealed that the once-exclusive content set aside for just PlayStation players will soon be released for everyone. But beyond that, it looks like the developers have something else planned for players to enjoy. 

Hogwarts Legacy continued its impressive run as PlayStation announced it was the platform's most downloaded PS5 game in the United States and Canada during 2023. Hogwarts Legacy outperformed other heavyweights like Call of Duty, Spider-Man, Madden, and more.

Back in 2024 Microsoft and Bethesda announced a new Indiana Jones game was coming our way courtesy of producer Todd Howard and Wolfenstein developer MachineGames, but since then, very little else has been revealed. Rumors that the game may be launching this year have been making the rounds, but it’s been radio silence from Microsoft and Bethesda themselves.

Just like death and taxes, you can usually rely on a Call of Duty game to top the sales charts each year. The various entries in Activision’s warfare simulation franchise have mostly done just that, going all the way back to 2009. This year’s a bit different. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III has fallen to second place, as reported by media research firm Circana.

2023 marked the first time in 15 years that a Call of Duty or Rockstar game didn’t top the annual sales chart in the United States.

Gfk’s UK physical sales charts for the week are now available, and EA Sports FC 24 has returned to the top spot, with sales up by 42 per cent. Last week’s top title, Hogwarts Legacy, dropped to second place, as price promotions on PS4 and PS5 helped propel EA’s football title upwards.

A AAA open world RPG based on Harry Potter was always going to do well, and unsurprisingly, Hogwarts Legacy has been a massive success for WB Games. The game, which has sold over 22 million units worldwide, was not only the best-selling game of 2023 in the UK, it also accomplished that feat in the US.
