Hogwarts Legacy Sells 22 Million Copies, "Series" Of Other Harry Potter Games In The Works

Star Wars is perhaps one of the few franchises more popular than Harry Potter, and one fan has created a legendary mashup of the two, placing Harry Potter characters in some of the original trilogy's most iconic scenes.

The best-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, has sold over 24 million units to date. The news came from Variety, which also outlined the ambitious plan Warner Bros. Discovery has for growth in the gaming space. The company values Harry Potter (the IP behind Hogwarts Legacy), Mortal Kombat (which has sold three million units since its debut last September), DC, and Game of Thrones franchises $1 billion each for their gaming potential, and it plans to capitalize on them all.

It’s no secret that Hogwarts Legacy was a huge revenue earner for Warner Bros. last year after becoming the best-selling title in the United States and the UK. However, after it sold over 22 million copies in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently told Variety that it crossed 24 million sales.

With the first anniversary of its initial release fast approaching, Hogwarts Legacy has teased future updates to the Wizarding World title, including some great news for players who purchased the game on a platform other than PlayStation. Hogwarts Legacy players have been clamoring for new content for some time now, and this update offers hope that good stuff is on the way.

Palworld, the viral hit action-adventure survival title from Japanese developers Pocketpair, has taken the gaming industry by storm, climbing to the top of Steam charts and selling six million copies in just four days of release. But as the game's player count balloons, it has found itself embroiled in a plagiarism controversy, with many on the Internet pointing out alleged similarities between the designs of Palworld's creatures and those in popular Pokémon games. It entered early access recently for PC and Xbox Series X/S and is also playable on Game Pass. Thus far, the title has hit 462,632 peak concurrent players on Steam.

Hogwarts Legacy has officially been crowned the best-selling new video game release of 2023, marking the first time that a non-Call of Duty or Rockstar Games title has taken the spot since 2008. Hogwarts Legacy released to positive reviews and record-breaking sales last February, and many were predicting that it would be the top-selling game of the year well before it even hit store shelves.

When J.K. Rowling really doubled down on her transphobic and highly controversial stock of opinions in 2022, it didn’t bode well for the Wizarding World franchise which hadn’t tasted true success since the eighth Harry Potterfilm. But evidently, it completely failed to derail a particular offshoot of the franchise.
