Helldivers 2 players seem to have discovered a new type of alien threat in the game called Shriekers. The new enemy type isn't mentioned in official game documentation or in the patch notes for the recent Helldivers 2 update, which adjusted aspects of weapon and enemy balance.
With hundreds of thousands of players online in its galactic war, Helldivers 2 is a certified multiplayer hit of the moment. And a player base that large means that virtually any change, no matter how minor, gets noticed quickly. Leaks and modifications can also reveal features that were originally intended to be kept secret, such as the Helldivers 2 mechs, which were only added officially by developer Arrowhead Game Studios recently.
The latest possible secret uncovered is a new enemy type called the Shrieker. Since the arrival of the version 1.000.102 update, players have been posting screenshots and clips on social media of what looks to be a member of the Helldivers 2 Terminid enemy faction. One such player was user Litnos on the Helldivers subreddit, who sighted an unusual enemy during a mission to fight Terminids. Due to the procedurally generated nature of the game's maps and missions, chances of the new foe showing up are somewhat randomized, so not all Helldivers 2 players fighting the Terminids have seen the new Shriekers yet.
As seen in the pictures from Litnos and in sightings by other users, the Helldivers 2 Shrieker is able to fly. It appears near clusters of large mushroom-like structures that look much like the Terminid Spore Spewers that are objective locations in Helldivers 2 and shroud the surrounding area in thick, alien fog and lower visibility. Looking like the Terminid Hunter but with larger wings, Shriekers attack by swooping down on unsuspecting Super Earth troopers. Terminid Hunters are notorious in Helldivers 2 for their ability to flank players and quickly close the distance by leaping high into the air, so it stands to reason that they might evolve the capacity for continuous flight as well.
Players reacted with surprise and delight, expressing excitement at finding something new in the game. Others praised developer Arrowhead Game Studios for seemingly hiding the Shriekers' existence from the game's patch notes. As of press time, Arrowhead has neither confirmed nor denied that the new enemy type was intentionally kept secret. The studio has accidentally omitted changes from patch notes before. In fact, the most recent patch notes cite an incident where Arrowhead neglected to include the previous patch's removal of Electronic Countermeasures, a Helldivers 2 mission modifier. But whether Arrowhead deliberately meant to keep the Shriekers secret or not, the latest update for Helldivers 2 allowed some

After suffering a recent, but narrow major order defeat, Helldivers 2 players are asking developer Arrowhead Game Studios to implement a way to see supply lines between planets. Part of the appeal of Helldivers 2, outside of the chaotic nature of missions where unplanned events can take place, is the game's living world. As players take on missions, they directly influence the galactic war by liberating planets, or on occassion, losing them to the enemy factions as well. This push and pull aspect keeps the game feeling fresh and dynamic, as the global map is constantly changing as progress is made or lost.
Helldivers 2 has been nothing short of a revelation, having enjoyed critical and commercial success to degrees that even Sony or developer Arrowhead Game Studios would have dreamt.
