The fight against the Automatons has been a struggle, pushing the Helldivers to the edge to get the job done. Are they gone forever, though?
This is the question plaguing the Helldivers 2 community as they now move on to eradicating the Terminids and look towards their next target.
Sure, developer Arrowhead Games has provided a roadmap to give players an indication of what's planned for the co-op third-person shooter — however, it seems there are still a few surprises in store.
In fact, it's the Helldivers 2 community that has dug deep to discover what faction is now set to materialise in an upcoming update.
We've rounded up all the details below, as well as what this means for the Automatons.
Yes, the Helldivers successfully completed Operation Swift Disassembly and defeated the Automatons in their never-ending pursuit of delivering democracy to the universe.
The official copy confirming the Automatons' downfall can be read below:
«The Automaton threat has been fully eradicated from our galaxy. Our citizens are safe, our heroic fallen avenged. With the bots eradicated and bugs contained, the galaxy is free once more.

»The supposed threat posed by the so-called 'Reclamation' can be considered fully ended. Out of an abundance of caution, SEAF teams will continue to search what remains of the Automaton facilities and servers for any additional intelligence."
While nothing has been officially confirmed, it's fair to expect the return of Automatons at some point in the life cycle of Helldivers 2. This is a live-service game, after all.
In terms of when we might see their return, we'd like to think it would be a few months at the very least – potentially not even until 2025.
This gives the Automatons a chance to refuel, rebuild and reengage its troops. We're confident this isn't the last time we've seen them.
With the Automatons gone, speculation has turned to what faction will replace the malevolent robots — andit seems that The Illuminateare poised to enter the battle.
Appearing in the original Helldivers game, the Illuminate are a highly advanced civilisation that has existed in the universe for thousands of years.
The aquatic-like species has been spotted in a datamine (via Reddit), with various enemy types also being listed. These include Adept, Ghoul, Illusionist, Obelisk, Outcast, Pathfinder and Summoner.
This isn't the first time a datamine for Helldivers 2 has found evidence of what's next for the game, with several discovering codes for mechs ahead of their

A Helldivers 2 developer has addressed questions surrounding theoretical bigger player squads, saying that it would "require a lot of work."
Problems with mechs aren't any fun to deal with, but interestingly enough, the bugs that have been affecting mechs might be one of the more realistic aspects of the game. can't be accused of being a particularly grounded video game, facing squads of soldiers up against hordes of Terminids and Automatons on exotic alien planets. At the same time, there is some gritty realism in its legitimate sense of challenge, and the style of the game's weaponry and machinery tends to veer closer to legitimate military function than flights of fancy.
The new Helldivers 2 Major Order was smashed through in under a day, but some players are concerned the game wasn't tracking Terminid kills correctly.
A Helldivers 2 dev says the studio is working on a handful of known issues, but fixing bigger problems is tricky when rolling out a new Warbond every month.
Somehow, I'd managed to miss the Helldivers 2 Factory Striders the first time around, but it seems that my time living in ignorance has come to an end. A new report claims that the monstrous, bot-spewing machines are back, and in far bigger numbers than ever before.
Alongside the righteousness of spreading managed democracy, if there's one thing Helldivers 2 soldiers go to bat for, it's Eagle-1. Throw in the suggestion that the faceless community favorite might actually be an anime girl, though, and down-bad fans aren't just going to bat – they're standing between the NPC pilot and whatever harm might come their way with more vigor than ever before.
It's pretty lonely out there as a Helldiver. Sure, you're surrounded by other Helldivers, and superior officers occasionally give you a pat on the back for collecting your samples and killing bots like a good little soldier, but there are very few NPCs in Helldivers 2 that actually have your back when things get tough. That's probably why so many people have fallen for Eagle-1, a disembodied voice that peppers the battlefield with explosions when asked.
Fire is out of control in Helldivers 2, but thankfully Arrowhead knows this and is working on a fix.
The last few days have been rough for Helldivers 2 players, to say the least. As the weekend began, we were hit with a new Major Order – halt the Automaton advance and hold the Menkent line, maintaining complete control over Menkent and Lesath in the process. It's just two planets, so simple enough, right?
There are plenty of stupid ways to accidentally throw your life away in Helldivers 2. You could stand under a dropship, drown in a lake, or run into an exploding bush, three things that personally killed me during my first few drops. I also accidentally burned my Helldiver alive by running through some ankle high flames, completely unaware of the recent complaints about how quickly fire is killing people after the game's latest patch.
Helldivers 2 players have begun expressing their frustration over bugs affecting their game experience, with one particular damage issue taking center stage. Their discontent is growing more vocal as the persistent issue is undermining the effectiveness of new Helldivers 2 weapons and content added by updates.
