What if we told you that the future of the God of War franchise might just lie in the hands of Kratos’ young son, Atreus?

In the gaming space, the evolution of a franchise over the course of years is vital for it to stay relevant. If you can’t maintain a certain quality level, things will go badly for you. But, if you take the time to reinvent yourself, the results can speak for themselves. A great example from 2023 is Mario, who had a “wonder-ful” new title showcase how Nintendo isn’t afraid to change things up on a large scale. Last year had an equally big shift via God of War Ragnarok and how it depicted Kratos and those around him.
The game was the continuation of the 2018 reboot by Santa Monica Studio, and from the get-go, it was an entirely different title from the PS2 games that David Jaffe created. It had a deeper story, a 3rd-person perspective, a revamped combat system, etc. Jaffe isn’t associated with these games, and he noted before that he was a fan of the 2018 reboot and some of the things it did. But in a recent video, he said he wasn’t as thrilled with what’s become of Kratos via the 2022 title.
Not only does he feel that the games are going in the “wrong direction,” he also feels that Santa Monica Studio did too much to Kratos and that his character is far beyond what it should be. He even cited the last two Indiana Jones movies and how they forced Dr. Jones to “grow and evolve,” and it hurt things:
“I don’t want these characters to grow.”
He even called out the arc with Atreus and how Kratos shouldn’t have a living son or be a father.
“I don’t like the direction that God of War is going in at all.”
So, how should we take these comments? Well, it’s a tricky thing. There’s no doubt that Kratos became an icon on the PS2 because of his incredibly violent ways and the story that let him wreak havoc upon the Greek pantheon. And the “other scenes” proved that he wasn’t afraid to “get dirty” with the right person.
So, if you were a fan of that version of Kratos, you might not like these titles as much, especially since not a lot of gods die in these two games compared to the first saga.
However, the acclaim that Santa Monica Studio has gotten for this deeper story with Kratos and the inclusion of Atreus is not to be ignored. Plus, both games sold HUGE for Sony. So, while Jaffe may not like it, they are getting results.
What if we told you that the future of the God of War franchise might just lie in the hands of Kratos’ young son, Atreus?
After virtually annihilating the entire Greek pantheon, Kratos (who is voiced by Christopher Judge) and his son Atreus (voiced by Sunny Suljic) are in dire need of new challengers and new realms to conquer in God of War 6. The perpetually enraged protagonist has already engaged the Norse realms in 2018’s God of War revival, opening doors to other new realms. I mean, why stop there when there are so many pantheons available for him to beat? God of War‘s Kratos could take on Egyptian gods, Iberian gods, and so much more.
God of War is a big success for Sony, especially Ragnarok, which has sold over 15 million units worldwide and recently received its acclaimed Valhalla DLC. However, some are still nostalgic for the old days of God of War, with Kratos traversing across ancient Greece and battling Zeus and his Pantheon.
The original God of War trilogy could be getting the remaster treatment.
The DLC for is not necessarily a modest addition to the game, but it isn't a full-blown expansion either. Regardless, it manages to add plenty of new content to the game. Throughout the base game, Kratos and Atreus manage to survive the last days of Fimbulwinter and play a key role in Ragnarok, an apocalyptic event in Norse mythology prophesied to result in the death of numerous gods. takes place after the base game's story in the eponymous mythical location.

God of War creator David Jaffe has expressed his unhappiness with the current direction of the God of War series, and Kratos in particular, as he thinks the feelings and personal lives of the developers at Santa Monica have negatively impacted the character.
Announced at The Game Awards 2023 and released as a free update shortly after, the DLC for sees Kratos fighting through the titular Valhalla in a fashion similar to a roguelite — making multiple runs which restart on death, and which offer both temporary and permanent resources and power-ups to make runs feel varied and distinct. Far from simply being a fun new game mode, however, also makes significant contributions in terms of story, with the DLC's narrative set after the events of and dealing with the disconnect between the classic games and the modern series.
The free, roguelite DLC for ,, isn't just a tacked-on additional mode, but an epilogue to the base game's story which sees Kratos directly confronting his past as the Olympian god of war. Part of this new chapter has Kratos reconnecting with an apparition of Helios – or more accurately, Helios' decapitated head. In the midst of Valhalla's ever-shifting locales, Mimir's head is occasionally replaced by that of Helios, heckling his murderer as Kratos navigates amalgamations of his memories. While allusions are made to Helios' decapitation and Kratos' motivations for performing it, doesn't expressly delineate the event from and its context.
