Peter Molyneux’s Godus and Godus Wars to be removed from Steam

From today, January 1st, NBA 2K22 is no longer available for sale and the online servers for those who own the game have been switched off permanently. The game was released in September 2021, and follows 2Ks pattern to switch off servers for its NBA 2K games a couple of years after the initial release.

Limited Run Games has been working tirelessly to re-release a bunch of retro classics, both in physical and digital format. Unfortunately, it seems even the preservation specialist’s efforts have a shelf life. Writing on Twitter earlier this week, CEO Josh Fairhurst revealed that Bill & Ted’s Excellent Retro Collection will be removed from the PS Store on 1st January – despite it launching less than a year ago!

Chinese regulators have announced far-reaching curbs on monetisation and reward systems for online games, in a move that has wiped almost $80 billion from the market value of the world's biggest videogame publisher Tencent and their rival NetEase. Under the new government restrictions, which are pending final approval, online games in China will be banned from giving players rewards for logging in every day, spending money within the game for the first time, or spending money several times consecutively.

Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory is a CRPG set in an Orwellian nightmare, a sci-fi society overrun by bureaucracy. At one point while playing it I tried to get a broken door fixed so I could get through, and after bouncing back and forth between various repair departments I eventually learned there was a final form I needed to fill out, and that form happened to be on the other side of the broken door. When Paranoia was mysteriously removed from sale weeks after its release with no explanation I tried to find out why, a quest that was just as frustrating as my attempt to get past that broken door.

Developer 22cans has withdrawn two of its games—Godus and Godus Wars—from Steam. Godus, originally released as an Early Access title on Steam 10 years ago, has never seen a 1.0 release, and has seen its fair share of controversies since release.

Godus and Godus Wars developer 22cans has withdrawn both games from Steam, ending a sorry saga for Peter Molyneux’s controversial project.

Infamous crowdfunded disaster Godus and its spin-off Godus Wars have both been removed from sale on Steam. A statement from studio 22cans says that "an upcoming technical change to Amazon Web Services" is to blame. Both games had been in Steam Early Access since first launching in 2013 and 2016 respectively, receiving few updates since and mostly or overwhelmingly negative reviews.

In the history of videogames, there are few botches more infamous than that of Godus. Envisioned as a god game in the style of Molyneux's earlier work on the groundbreaking Populous, it was also intended to be the home of the winner of Curiosity, the game about smashing away pieces of a cube to reach the mysterious prize inside—a prize that turned out to be godhood in Godus.
