Gamer Turns Their PS5 Into a Portable Tablet That Can Play PlayStation Games

A popular YouTuber turned their Sony PlayStation 5 into a fully-fledged gaming tablet. The custom portable device ended up being significantly smaller than even the slim version of Sony's current generation game console, all while performing at spec and generating less noise than a gaming laptop.
The Sony PS5 is one of the most powerful consoles available right now, giving people the ability to play the most modern AAA titles for as low as $399. It also provides gamers access to a vast library of older titles, including those that date all the way back to the original PS1 thanks to Sony's PlayStation Plus Premium subscription service. A content creator has successfully harnessed the power of the PS5 in the form of a portable by creating a custom tablet that uses the ninth generation console's internals.
In a recently uploaded 18-minute video, YouTuber DIY Perks showed off what he claimed was the world's first PS5 tablet. The content creator, whose real name is Matthew Perks, used the cut-down motherboard of the latest PS5 SKU as the starting point for the project. He then added a cooling solution, OLED screen, speaker setup, and 3D-printed chassis to complete the tablet. DIY Perks' machine delivered the same performance as a regular PS5, but it took up a significantly smaller footprint than even the relatively new Sony PS5 Slim. The tablet's custom cooling solution also impressed by generating less noise than a gaming laptop, giving DIY Perks a quiet experience when playing.
People praised DIY Perks' PS5 tablet, with many using terms like amazing, incredible, fantastic, among others, to describe the custom system. One YouTube user even claimed that the form factor DIY Perks' tablet used should be seriously considered in the future, but the content creator pointed out in his video that no one knows if such devices would actually sell well. While there has been an influx of powerful handheld Windows gaming PCs in the market following the success of Valve's Steam Deck, those that come close to delivering the performance of a dedicated home console are either too expensive or too impractical for most people.
This is not the first time DIY Perks has used a PS5 in one of his projects. He created a thinner PS5 with a copper chassis long before Sony announced an official slim version, although the copper used for that project alone cost around $240. DIY Perks has also made a high-end PS5 made out of brass without altering the console's shape and form.
Gamers have been patiently waiting for Sony to officially return to the handheld gaming market by introducing a successor to the PS Vita. Sony did release the PlayStation Portal in November 2023, but that is only a streaming accessory that lets PlayStation 5 owners
