On Tuesday, former Keywords Studios QA testers based in Edmonton, who worked on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, picketed in front of developer BioWare Edmonton, despite EA's attempts to block the demonstration.
They were the first unionised developer in Canada, but unfortunately, they were laid off by Keywords Studios last month, supposedly because "there is no more work available". This is despite the studio still listing QA job postings on its website within Canada, and after reportedly having the laid-off staff train their own replacements.
The contract ending with BioWare was unfortunate, but as KWS workers we understand contacts come and go. However, we put the onus on Keywords to continue to supply us with work. The fact is Keywords still staffs non-unionised workers on projects in Alberta but maintains us union workers are unable to do this work. We may never know if BioWare had an end in our contract end but regardless neither party has said why the contract couldn't come to an agreement.
The goal of the picket was to get Keyword Studios to hire the devs back and renegotiate the original contract with BioWare, arguing that the layoff was a "union-busting tactic".
EA argued that, because they were remote workers, they should take their protests elsewhere, even suggesting they hold them outside of their own homes. It told Kotaku that the protests were "misguided", stating, "We hope that Keywords and the union are able to resolve their differences, but ultimately BioWare has no role in that process."
However, former employee and union spokesperson James Russwurm argues that the protests are necessary to bring about a healthier work environment for developers, "The industry does need more union action. These large studios aren't going to stop their practices because we asked nicely. Historically, real labour change has come about from worker action."
The video game industry only got its first major union last year with Raven Software.
While EA stated that BioWare has no role in whether former KWS devs are reinstated, Russwurm told us, "We are very open to working again with BioWare and Electronic Arts. If Keywords could reach a working arrangement with them, we would be happy to staff those positions."
It's still unclear why EA did not renew the contract as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will no doubt be an incredibly ambitious game, continuing a beloved RPG franchise. It has also undergone several internal delays, and BioWare itself has laid off staff internally, despite the game still being unfinished. EA did, however, claim that the choice had nothing to do with the staff unionising.
As for why the devs at Keywords Studios Edmonton unionised in the first place, Russwurm tells us, "Our initial unionisation was

Food and culture are inseparable. Here in the US that’s perhaps more noticeable during this week than at any other time of the year, as tens of millions of us plan to break bread together in observance of Thanksgiving. But I’ve spent most of a decade considering it in the context of a culture that doesn’t actually exist: Thedas, the setting of BioWare’s Dragon Age franchise.
The Last of Us 2 Remastered could feature more than a dozen levels in its new roguelike mode.
Fade is an action RPG billed as a mix of Dark Souls' combat and Fable's narrative direction, and after shopping it around to publishers while self-publishing in extended Steam Early Access (which included a bit of a hiatus), solo creator Knight by Night has doubled down on independent work because they can't find a publisher deal that works for them.
Immortals of Aveum might get a new lease on life through a subscription service.
Fantasy shooter Immortals of Aveum failed to hit sales expectations due to the sheer number of games coming out at the same time.
As reported by Axios, developer Aspyr has argued that a class action lawsuit brought against it over the cancellation of a Restored Content DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 — The Sith Lords should be dismissed. The DLC was announced in June of 2022 before getting canceled after a year of radio silence, with Aspyr offering customers a free game to make amends.
A Mass Effect and Dragon Age veteran has announced they are leading their own AAA game studio focusing on narrative and worldbuilding.
Although a Senior Cinematic Animator at EA, Kevin Scott, added to his LinkedIn page with the inclusion of “(2024 release)," the game does not yet have an official release date. Scott's update to his LinkedIn page () has stoked the fires of fan excitement; however, the current state of the game's developer, BioWare, may indicate that fans of the franchise should not get their hopes up for a 2024 release of this long-awaited sequel.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is coming out early next year, and like its predecessors it's likely to be rammed full of side-activities complex enough to be their own games. We've already seen a straight-up Animal Crossing send-up packed into it. I shudder to think what other dark designs the developers at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have up their sleeves.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will launch next year, according to a developer's LinkedIn page. This aligns with previous reports of the long-awaited sequel aiming for a 2024 release date, finally ending the decade-long series hiatus.
