Red XIII is among the most unique playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. While most of the cast is clearly offense-oriented, even long-range characters like Barret and Aerith, the wolf-like talking beast is meant to be played as a defensive character that comes with a surprising amount of depth. As such, he is not exactly straightforward to play, as you need to pay attention to a few things to make him show his true potential.

As mentioned above, Red XIII is a defensive character that has to be played differently than the rest of the cast to show what he can really do. His unique ability is Vengeance Mode, which can only be activated after the gauge has been filled by blocking or parrying attacks. The fuller the gauge is, the longer Vengeance Mode will last. The longest Vengeance Mode will last is after using Red XIII's level 2 Limit Break, Howling Moon.
In Vengeance Mode, all of Red XIII's attacks are enhanced, and he can use Syphon Fang, a special attack that restores health. Additionally, in Vengeance Mode, he can perform a fast lunging strike that goes through enemies and restores a small amount of HP by pressing the triangle button after dodging.
The Red XIII's basic toolkit is rounded up by a spinning attack performed by holding down the square button and a counterstrike that can be performed using the same button after blocking or parrying an attack.
How to Play Red XIII in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
As entering Vengeance Mode as soon as possible is Red XIII's entire game plan, you will want to stay on the defensive at all times. Since blocking doesn't negate damage, Red XIII should always equip the Steadfast Block materia, which reduces damage while blocking and charges ATB. Red XIII, much like Aerith, requires some time to build up ATB with regular attacks, so this provides a very welcome boost. Additionally, equip the Precision Defense Focus materia to extend the time window for parrying, another essential skill for a character that relies so much on defense. Having ATB to spend helps Red XIII quite a lot, as the essential Sentinel Stance ability allows him to negate all damage for a few seconds and unleash a powerful counter. As Red XIII cannot fight aerial enemies well, ATB also solves this issue by giving him access to spells, Enemy Skills, and the devastating Stardust Ray ability.
Unlike in Remake, enemies in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth don't always go after your controlled character, creating a problem for Red XIII, who wants to be targeted by them at all times. This is easily solved by his Synergy Skill, Wild Charge, which allows him to close in on an enemy resisting all damage

Shortly before launch, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi confused many fans of the series by explaining that the development team made two versions of each side quest all because of Red XIII. We didn't know why at the time, as we weren't aware of the voice change that Red XIII goes through a little ways into the game itself, first hinted at in Under Junon and then again in Costa del Sol.
The final boss of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a doozy. There’s a series of Chapter 14 bosses waiting for you at the end of the story, and they get increasingly difficult — it can take upwards of an hour or more to fight them all, and some phases of the boss can wipe your party in an instant. We’ve got video and a whole lot of text to help you beat the biggest bosses of the game. Here’s how to take on Jenova and the many, many forms of Sephiroth.
As many people have said on dating profiles (or mothers on their wall art), I love a video game that makes me laugh, and I am delighted Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been so goddamn good at it.

Take an extended trip through the Corel Mountains with two big bosses in Chapter 7. In this section, we’re taking on the Custom Valkyrie and the Gigatrice — the Custom Valkyrie similar to a boss encountered late in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The flying drone spews flames all over the arena, before cooling off to recharge. When it’s cooling, that’s your best shot to really damage this monster. The Gigatrice is even more complicated — the monster summons tornadoes that can be imbued with elemental magic. Hit those tornadoes with fire, thunder, blizzard or aera to transform them into swirling damage-dealing weapons. Lure Gigatrice into its own tornado to knock it out of the sky. Learn more about each boss with the full guide below.
The toughest bosses in the game so far appear in Chapter 9 — both Specimen H1024 and Crimson Mare Mk. 2 can wipe your party if you don’t target their weaknesses. You’re stuck using specific characters for both boss fights, so don’t rely on your usual strategies. You’ll need to change things up and reset your Materia for the best chance at survival. Bring Ice Materia for the first fight and Fire Materia for use against Scarlet herself. The Specimen will slowly absorb more Mako until it unleashes a killer attack that hits your entire party — there’s no dodging this, you’ll just have to suppress it by dealing high damage while it attempts to absorb. Interrupting it is your only option. The Crimson Mare has a similar mechanic. If you don’t destroy both arms of the mech (before one is repaired) then she’ll continue to hammer you with deadly attacks. Try dealing damage to both equally before quickly crippling. And that’s just scratching the surface of these encounters. Learn more about each boss in the full guide below.
There’s a lot to take in during the opening hours of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Not only do you have an entire cast of characters to play as right away, but a fast hub world to explore. One thing you’ll get very familiar with right away is collecting resources for crafting items. These things are littered all over the world, begging to be collected. However, there are rare parts out there, such as the Quetzalcoatl Talon, that you can only get from one specific source. If you’re trying to finish the “Where the Wind Blows” side quest specifically, you’ll need this fiend’s claw to complete it, so let’s hunt it down.
Among the many optional activities you can complete in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are the World Intel events, which allow you to experience more of the game's expansive world.
The sunny resort town of Costa Del Sol is packed with minigames and activities – including lots of games you’re required to finish if you want to dress up Cloud, Aerith and Tifa in the latest swimwear fashions. Wasting time on the beach is fun, but we’re hungry for a different kind of leisure. If you’re hunting down Queen’s Blood cards, you’ll want to complete all the puzzles at the Card Carnival booth. This optional activity challenges you to solve puzzles using set cards, and some of these puzzles are incredibly tricky. To help you unlock all the cards, here’s a full rundown of every puzzle and solution.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth takes everything that made Remake's combat system great, and turns it up to eleven to make each enemy encounter fun and engaging.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sees the return of the engaging Fort Condor minigame seen in the INTERmission expansion of the previous entry in the series. Featuring the same mechanics, this minigame is among the best featured in the game, but it can also be one of the most challenging, alongside Queen's Blood, as it requires a bit of tactical thinking to master.
