Nobuo Uematsu—legendary music composer for a host of video games including the Final Fantasy franchise—has revealed that he doesn’t think he can compose the soundtrack for an entire game ever again. Caught by VGC, Uematsu made the feeling clear while talking to German publication Zeit Online.
While Uematsu still does work for the Final Fantasy franchise, namely in composing the games’ main title tracks, he revealed that doesn’t see himself composing an entire game’s worth of soundtrack again. In large part this comes down to the amount of work needed to compose a game’s soundtrack.
“As far as Final Fantasy is concerned, I’m still involved by writing the main themes for the games,” said Uematsu in response to being asked whether he could be convinced to compose a whole game’s soundtrack again. “But I don’t think I’ll compose music for a whole game again.”
Uematsu believes that his age has led him to not have the physical and mental strength to put in the work required for a complete video game soundtrack anymore.
“You would have to give it full throttle for two or three years. And I don’t think I have the physical and mental strength to do it anymore,” he said. “I think I’d rather use the time I have left to work on other projects that I love. Such as compositions like Merregnon or my band Uematsu Nobuo conTIKI.”
For context, Uematsu is still involved in composing music, with his work being present in Final Fantasy 16, and even the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The last full soundtrack Uematsu composed was 2021’s RPG Fantasian.

We’ll say this up front for those of you still exploring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s vast world: there are no late-game story spoilers here. As seen in its pre-release debut via a new trailer late last year, the action RPG’s theme song “No Promises to Keep” is performed in-game by Aerith. Behind the scenes though, the track was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary composer behind the iconic soundtracks for much of the Final Fantasy series, including Final Fantasy VII Remake. The song’s vocals were performed by American singer Loren Allred, who brought her spellbinding singing voice to the track, augmenting the beautiful—yet tragic—world of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the epic story told within it.

In the world of video game soundtracks, you can’t get much more iconic than Nobuo Uematsu. Most well-known for composing soundtracks for the first nine Final Fantasy games, the musician has gone on to write tracks for many subsequent entries to the franchise, most recently penning the tearjerking theme song for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, No Promises to Keep.
Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu believes game music has become too similar to film and «cannot develop further» if continuing in this direction.
Zanarkand is, arguably, one of the most haunting pieces of music ever composed for a Final Fantasy game. However, in a recent interview with Japanese outlet Weekly Ochiai, accomplished Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu revealed that the legendary theme from Final Fantasy 10 had an unlikely origin.
Legendary video game music composer Nobuo Uematsu says he doesn’t think some modern video game soundtracks are as interesting as those in older games.
