Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3's Ending Will Tie Into Advent Children

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 6.5 launched with the final tier of its Myths of the Realm Alliance Raid earlier this month, and it’s still packing secrets to discover. The new 24-man raid apparently has a little easter egg for players familiar with the MMO’s fishing lore, and it involves shooting your shot with one of the realm’s 12 gods, Llymlaen.

Square Enix has been slowly pulling back the curtain on what fans can expect from the upcoming sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. The original game was a masterpiece in nearly every way, and was praised for respecting the original game while expanding on all that could be done in the Midgar section of the title. With the upcoming sequel, gamers will finally see much of the rest of the planet and get new characters to help them flesh out their party and, by extension, the story. But a new rumor states that there’s already been work done on the game’s final entry.

Square Enix hosted a panel for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at New York Comic-Con 2023 hosted by Critical Role’s Matt Mercer, in which the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth voice cast discussed their experiences voicing the game’s iconic characters. During the panel, Matt Mercer confirmed he will voice Vincent Valentine, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi appeared for a surprise question-and-answer session at the end.

Final Fantasy has been such a massive franchise that spanned across decades and across multiple console generations. There’s been some truly standout installments from this long-running series as well. One of the more beloved games of the series was Final Fantasy VII, a title that blew up in multiple markets when it initially launched in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation. Since then, fans worldwide have pleaded for Square Enix to return and bring out a remake for this JRPG installment. Fortunately, in 2020, we finally got the first part of this remake. Since this game installment was so massive, the developers could only deliver the game in parts. We’re going to receive Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second installment to this trilogy remake, in 2024.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is going to be a much more open experience than its predecessor, and it seems like fan feedback was among the reasons behind this.

Nintendo’s next-gen console has been in the leaks a great deal recently. Allegedly set to be capable of outputting visuals that’ll be comparable to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S thanks to its implementation of DLSS, recent leaks have claimed that the Switch 2 will be seeing simultaneous releases for a lot of major multiplatform games. However, if you were hoping that the console would also get a port of Final Fantasy 7 Remake – as some have speculated – it seems that won’t be the case.

If PlayStation UK's provocative advertisement for Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Collector's Edition wasn't enough to entice, maybe Square Enix has the goods to loosen those purse strings. Now available for preorder, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's Collector's Edition comes with some tantalising extras, including a girthy bust of the long boy himself: Sephiroth, the One-Winged Angel (the wing is detachable).

Set two years after the climactic events of the original Final Fantasy VII, for gamers of a certain vintage, the 2006 CG film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was really all we had in the way of closure, if you can call it that. Visually stunning, if narratively nonsensical, it contained insane action sequences that are still incredible today. That Final Fantasy VII Remake largely succeeded in being a playable Advent Children is a testament to how good we've got things these days.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy can never be faulted for its scale or ambition, and in its drive to be the most thorough, comprehensive, and frankly, unexpected retelling and reimagination of the original’s iconic story, it’s managed to already go above and beyond in ways that have taken many by surprise. But by the time it’s all over and the dust has settled, how well will its story connect with other chapters of the FF7 universe, especially given the intriguing changes and alterations that its making to the original’s own story?
