may be the last of V's story, but it's a step towards a brighter future for CD Projekt Red. The expansion is both the first and last for the futuristic RPG, which is set in Mike Pondsmith's universe — and after the game's less-than-ideal launch in late 2020, its announcement sowed both seeds of curiosity and doubt. Even though it's not quite flawless in its execution, delivers its promise with an excellent story, engrossing gameplay, and quality-of-life improvements that make the game it always should've been.
The DLC takes place in the middle of 's main story, which is appropriate given V's life-or-death predicament. Players are free to either continue playing on a previous save, or to create a new character for the expansion, as activates automatically past a certain main story checkpoint. There, V receives a strange holocall from a mysterious character named Songbird, promising them a cure for the Relic and thus setting the spy-thriller expansion into motion.

's story is electrifying, emotional, and full of twists; it makes the heart race and ache in equal measure. What begins as a not-so-simple mission to save the President quickly spirals into something much deeper and darker, in which the fate of characters like Idris Elba's Solomon Reed, Songbird, and V hang dangerously in the balance. As secrets are revealed and true colors are shown, it becomes more than a tale of mere survival or politics. Both complex and morally-gray characters, Solomon and Songbird spin differing tales of trust, betrayal, and forgiveness. It's up to V to choose a side, and it proves to be a painfully difficult decision.
Fortunately, choices are just as impactful as they are hard to make, and players can unlock different endings depending on which path they opt to walk. The story branches off in two drastically different directions, both of which involve hours of unique gameplay, character arcs, and outcomes for everyone involved. As a matter of fact, certain choices can lead to a new base game ending, which is nothing short of shocking. Plus, a few moments with Johnny Silverhand are sprinkled in here and there, which serve to further explain his past, highlight his interpersonal struggles, and help him flourish in 's overall story.
's main questline doesn't disappoint gameplay-wise, harboring some of the most fun the game has to offer. Missions are lengthy, well-paced, and bring exciting set pieces to the table. There are opportunities for V to strategize and create a custom battle plan, hack and drive a car remotely, «become» another character, and more — some of which are choice-dependent, but all of which make for enthralling experiences.

Horror isn't for everyone, and gamers that would rather sit back and get engrossed in a story rather than scare the living daylights out of themselves usually spring for an RPG like Skyrim or Cyberpunk 2077. However, game developers like to mix things up every now and then, bringing certain elements of the horror genre into their RPGs for a one-off spooky mission that has everyone just wanting to chill out with an RPG cowering behind their cushions.
And the main game has climbed to 25 million copies sold.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty isn't a horror game, which is precisely why one uncharacteristically terrifying mission is catching so many unsuspecting players off guard.
's DLC is full of choices that V must make — and these decisions can ultimately affect which ending players get. In fact, some options can even lock players out of s true new ending, and one of these factors includes deciding to kill Solomon Reed or agreeing to his deal. This occurs extremely late in the game, but it will have a major impact on the ending, so knowing which choice is correct is important.
Phantom Liberty and Update 2.0 might have made a lot of improvements to Cyberpunk 2077 but one new bug has introduced a haunted police car to Night City.
has added a new car as a tribute to famed rally driver Ken Block: the Quadra Type 66 «Hoon.» This particular variant of the Quadra Type 66 has been modified for rally driving, boasting a powerful engine and excellent handling both on and off-road. It also comes with mounted machine guns and armor plating for vehicle combat, making it an excellent choice for cruising the lawless streets of Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 is, finally, having its big launch moment. On Tuesday, buoyed by the 2.0 patch and expansion Phantom Liberty, the game hit its highest peak playercount since 2020. We loved Phantom Liberty, saying in our review that it's "CD Projekt firing on all cylinders to tell a great RPG story." It's been a long but impressive comeback for Cyberpunk, and the fact that the game is finally getting universal praise made me wonder if CD Projekt was reconsidering its plan to move on to a new game. After all, The Witcher 3's Hearts of Stone was good, but Blood & Wine was even better…
's main story is all about becoming a legendary edgerunner in Night City and getting Johnny Silverhand's relic out of V's head, but a distinct highlight of the game is romancing some of its key characters. Romancing Judy or Panam seem to be the most popular of the game's five options, but each have an associated storyline worth playing through even if love's not on the agenda. The release of, 's first and only expansion, has brought with it the 2.0 update and a significant overhaul to the whole game. Included in 's new story is Songbird, a major character working for the President of the New United States of America, but the DLC doesn't seem to extend any new offerings of romance.
Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty launches today, and if you're planning on making a return trip to Night City, be cautious, as you can miss out on the expansion's main quest entirely if you mess up an early mission.
Phantom Liberty, the long-awaited expansion to Polish video game developer CD Projekt's flagship game "Cyberpunk 2077", received a "very positive" rating on the Steam platform that sells digital copies of games for PCs.
CD Projekt have dropped the launch trailer for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, in great news for fans of driving-combat-cutscene montages and wailing, rain-slicked theme tunes, but less great news, apparently, for mega fans of the male-presenting incarnation of player character V, voiced by Gavin Drea. I haven't touched Cyberpunk since release in 2020, and I'm sort of intrigued to discover that the female-presenting version of the protagonist, voiced by Cherami Leigh, has become the default for marketing purposes.
