One of the lead producers of the Dragon Quest series is reportedly stepping down and being moved to head up Square Enix's mobile phone division following several delays in Dragon Quest 12's development.
Although I'm sure my fellow Kingdom Hearts fans would argue that we have it the worst when it comes to waiting for one of Square Enix's flagship RPGs, there is another group that is suffering even more than us - Dragon Quest fans. The next big game in the series, Dragon Quest 12, was teased all the way back in 2021 and, despite it now being seven years since the last release, hasn't been heard from since.
Despite many hoping that 2024 would be the year to change that and when we finally get our first proper look at the upcoming game, it looks like that's probably not going to happen. Earlier today, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that the lead producer of the Dragon Quest series, Yu Miyake, is stepping down from his position and heading up Square's mobile games division.
According to Bloomberg's report, Miyake stepping down is due to "delays in developing the next installment of the popular series", which does at least seem to confirm that Dragon Quest 12 is further behind in its schedule than we all thought it was. With such a big change reportedly being made to the development team, it seems unlikely that we'll hear much from the next Dragon Quest for some time.
Miyake's switch from producer to mobile phone leader is just one part of a large-scale reorganisation that took place on Monday, people familiar with the change told Bloomberg. Square Enix previously announced that it was aiming to create more triple-A games in-house, which seems to be why such big changes have been made to the Dragon Quest 12's development team.
Miyake is responsible for producing pretty much every Dragon Quest game that has released since Dragon Quest 5 , which means he has a very long history with the series.
One of the candidates who is rumoured to take Miyake's spot as Dragon Quest producer is Yosuke Saito, who worked on both Nier Automata and Nier Replicant. Sources familiar with what's happening at Square Enix have called him a "strong candidate" to overtake the role, although no changes have officially been made just yet.

Developers at Dead Space remake creators EA Motive were pushing to make a "new entry" in the sci-fi horror series before EA shelved it last year, according to the latest in a recent outbreak of Dead Spacey rumours and revelations that have spread through the bulkheads of the internet, coating everybody's devices with necrotic slime.
Last night, a report claimed a Dead Space 2 remake had been in the works at EA. However, a subsequent report — which itself follows on from EA denying any such remake was in the pipeline — has poured more cold water on these initial claims. In fact, the whole series is reportedly «on ice».
