It has been announced that Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Gaming president Cynthia Williams will be stepping down at the end of the month, officially leaving her role at both companies on April 26. Williams apparently announced her resignation to Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Gaming on April 15, according to an SEC filing from Hasbro.
Williams has not revealed why she's resigning from her role as president, nor has Hasbro or Wizards at the Coast at the time of writing, but the SEC filing also notes that the process to find a suitable replacement is already underway. We don't know who is in the running to replace Williams, but Hasbro mentions that it's looking at "both internal and external candidates," with a temporary president set to take the role in the meantime.
Shortly after Williams' resignation was made public, Hasbro released a statement to tabletop outlet Dicebreaker explaining that the company is "grateful for the contributions" she made during her time at Hasbro Gaming and Wizards of the Coast. It then goes on to say that those at the company "wish her the absolute best" in her future endeavors and that it hopes to "have a successor in place soon."
Williams' departure later this month may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's yet more trouble and strife for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. Despite having one of the most successful - and most likely profitable - games to have ever been released in Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro has been plagued with layoffs, with over 2,000 people having lost their jobs over the last year.
It's difficult to see the situation improving either, without a title like Baldur's Gate 3 to boost the company's coffers in the next fiscal year. Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have stated that they know people want more great Dungeons & Dragons-based video games, pointing to BG3 as proof, and Wizards has already been "talking to partners" about a sequel, but any developer that takes that mantle will struggle to replicate the game's success.
Either way, it's not a good look for Hasbro to be losing Cynthia Williams only a couple of years after she took the job - whether she resigned from her role voluntarily or not - but let's just hope this isn't a sign of yet more trouble later down the line.

Baldur's Gate fans, new and old, will remember where they were when they first heard that dark horse Larian Studios would not be developing the next game. How could any dev walk away from an achievement like Baldur's Gate 3, a masterpiece which teased a vanishingly rare «10» out of this stingy scribe, one of only two ever given? Sadly, this is the reality in which we live, and IP-holder Wizards of the Coast has already moved on, actively courting other developers, with RPG studios lining up to throw their hats in the ring.
While Xbox Game Pass is set to gain a selection of fantastic Day-One releases in the back half of April, subscribers may want to act fast to play the six games leaving the service in the coming weeks. To offset the amount of titles the platform offers, Microsoft always removes a handful of games whenever it brings in a new selection for players to experience. While that might sound like a bad deal, it makes sense given the already massive catalog on offer and users can still pick up the departing games for a discount before they eventually leave.
The president of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Gaming, Cynthia Williams, will soon be stepping down from her position in the company. Hasbro is yet to decide on who will replace her as head of Wizards of the Coast.

Just as they received the Game of the Year prize at the GDC Awards in San Francisco, the developers of Baldur's Gate 3 announced through Larian CEO Swen Vincke that they wouldn't continue to make a sequel or even DLCs for the acclaimed cRPG.
Larian Studios confirmed earlier this year that it will not be involved in Baldur's Gate 4. The studio is moving away from Dungeons & Dragons to focus on its own projects, whatever they may be. But that doesn't mean the series is over.
Larian Studios didn't so much smash last year's Baldur's Gate 3 out of the park as launch it straight into orbit, collecting countless Game of the Year awards and even a few BAFTAs along the way. But while the studio has made it clear it has no interest in returning for a Baldur's Gate 4, Dungeons and Dragons owner Wizard of the Coast is definitely onboard for more, and is currently «talking to lots of partners» about the future of the series.
