It's safe to say that the launch of Diablo 4's Season of the Malignant has been a bit of a disaster. A pre-season patch that nerfed pretty much every class and completely butchered Sorcerers caused widespread outrage amongst the community, becoming so bad that Blizzard had to address the issues in a developer livestream that took place last week. Fixes have been promised and the anger had been quelled slightly, but Diablo 4 players have already found something else to direct their ire towards - the game's Battle Pass.
Diablo 4 promised before launch that every new season will bring with it a Battle Pass for players to get stuck into, each one filled with rewards such as cosmetics, emotes, mounts, and a sprinkling of premium currency called Platinum. However, if you were hoping to buy something from Diablo 4's in-game store with that smattering of Platinum, you're out of luck, as fans recently discovered that the 666 Platinum you're given for completing the Battle Pass isn't enough for even the cheapest item.

Yep, you read the right. The cheapest item in the Dibalo 4 in-game store costs 800 Platinum, which is 134 more than what the game's Premium Battle Pass gives you. That means that if you want to buy something you'll either have to buy more Platinum on top of the money you spent to actually get the Premium Battle Pass in the first place, or just sit on 666 Platinum until the next Battle Pass comes along in Season 2. Either way, it's not a great situation.
Diablo 4 players aren't too happy about this as you might expect, but they've also been complaining about how bad it is through the power of mathematics. Like u/jessewperez works out in the Reddit post above, if you do wait and purchase Season 2's Battle Pass, you'll get 1332 Platinum, which is enough to purchase the next season's Battle Pass free of charge. After that, you'll be left with 332 Platinum.
Add another 666 Platinum on top of that, and you'll get 998, leaving you two short of another free Battle Pass. It's a bit of a stretch, but a large number of players think this is a deliberate tactic by Blizzard to stop people from obtaining too many free Battle Passes. This is all assuming that Blizzard actually offers up the same amount of Platinum each Pass of course, so hopefully we get even the smallest increase in upcoming seasons now that Blizzard probably knows fans are happy with them.

Some players progressing the Seasonal Battle Pass have run into a frustrating bug — even though they have claimed a reward, the Battle Pass doesn't consider it «redeemed», leaving the rewards in limbo. In yet more Diablo 4 live service drama, developer Blizzard has been accused of «malicious design» by fans for the apparent shocking ease with which the game parts players from their hard-earned money, whether they intended it or not.
Reaping the live service whirlwind, Blizzard is in yet more hot water with Diablo 4 players after it was realised the popular action RPGs Battle Pass only pays out 666 Platinum upon completion, in keeping with the title's hellish marketing. This is not enough to purchase the next Season's Battle Pass or any cosmetic item, with the cheapest costing 800 Platinum (thanks, IGN), which is pretty wild when you stop to consider.
When Diablo 4 Season 1 launched, many first-timers, fans, and streamers alike were disgruntled by how easy it was to unlock the Premium Battle Pass. With one click, players lost their Premium Battle Pass ticket they had acquired from buying the Deluxe Edition of the game or wasted the Platinum they spent good money on.
Patch 1.1.1 for Diablo 4 is still some ways off, but Blizzard Entertainment has released patch 1.1.0c. It contains several fixes and adjustments, but most importantly, it prevents controller players from accidentally activating their Premium Battle Pass when opening the menu. Along with defaulting to the Season Journey button, you also get a confirmation pop-up to activate the Premium tier.
