Back in 2018, former DICE CEO Patrick Soderlund and chief creative officer Rob Runnesson broke away from the Battlefield developer to start their own indie team, Embark Studios.
At the Game Awards 2021, they unveiled their first project, ARC Raiders, a third-person extraction shooter where multiple teams of players worked with and against one another to take on giant machines. While that game was originally scheduled to be their debut title, ARC Raiders was ultimately delayed beyond 2022, and seems likely to miss its 2023 release window as well despite holding closed playtesting back in the summer. Fortunately, Embark Studios has also been hard at work on a second multiplayer title, which was first revealed in August of last year. Known as The Finals, this squad-based competitive FPS tasks players with surviving a deadly game show and escaping with the largest payout. Multiple closed betas have been held for the shooter on PC, where players have come to appreciate the impressive destruction mechanics that have often played a large role in the Battlefield series.
Now, The Finals is finally ready to make its console debut with the announcement of a cross-play open beta on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC that was made during today’s Xbox Partner Preview showcase. The standard match mode that players will partake in is Cashout, where three to four teams of three players will search for cashboxes to retrieve money from and vaults to deposit them in, while staying alert for other players with similar goals and murderous intentions. In addition to a casual mode with faster respawns and extractions, the open beta will also include unranked and ranked tournaments, allowing up to 48 players to face off on the path to total victory. Plus, a brand new mode will be available called Bank-It, which puts a stronger emphasis on combat as four teams of three fight to reach the max limit first.
Before heading out into the arena, players can test out their skills in the Practice Range, where you can mess around with different loadouts and mechanics. For the open beta, players will be able to choose between twenty weapons, 26 gadgets and nine abilities, with the weapons offering five mastery levels for each gun. In addition to sixteen exclusive rewards that can be unlocked as part of the free battle pass, ranked matches will take advantage of a five
