Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will release this October, including a day one launch on Game Pass, with an open beta on the way - and it’s certainly looking like a Call of Duty game.
The shooter opened Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase tonight with a gameplay reveal trailer, interspersing live-action clips of Presidents Bush and Clinton with planes dropping bombs, burning oil wells, helicopters, exploding vehicles and lots of bullets whizzing about. The typically subtle reveal was backed by The Prodigy’s Firestarter
The trailer also confirmed that Black Ops 6 takes place in the nineties after the end of the Cold War. As well as the very Call of Duty-looking gunfights, there were some snippets of what looked to be more James Bond-esque espionage levels, with talk of a compromised agency, traitors, conspiracies, hidden truths and some kind of biohazard threat.
As well as the campaign, there’ll be the returning multiplayer - with a dozen six-on-six maps, plus four four smaller Strike maps - and Zombies modes, with the latter having two maps at launch.
In a clear dig at Call of Duty’s more recent console home on PlayStation, Xbox’s Phil Spencer highlighted that the showcase appearance was the first on-stage Xbox showing for a Call of Duty game in a decade, before confirming that the game’s upcoming beta, season expansions and updates will land simultaneously across all platforms.
Spencer went on to drop the tidbit that Call of Duty currently has over 100 million players - colour me personally surprised at the size of that sustained audience, honestly, even with Warzone taken into account - before reconfirming, as we already knew, that Black Ops 6 will arrive in Game Pass on day one.
That Day One will specifically be October 25th of this year, with an open beta arriving sometime before that. We’ll no doubt find out more shortly during the game’s own dedicated Direct after the Xbox showcase.

Wccftech recently had the opportunity to get an intimate behind-closed-doors look at Monster Hunter Wilds with a 30-minute gameplay demonstration from the Director of the title himself, Yuya Tokuda. During this hands-off demo, Capcom showcased a selection of early game content, from departing the main village and venturing out into the wilds with a map size that they’re already touting as over two times larger than previous titles and featuring a seamless transition with no loading from camp to quest.
Yesterday’s big Xbox Showcase was stacked with software, but as is often the case with these platform presentations, a large number of the titles on display will be releasing elsewhere. This is true of at least 13 of the titles on offer, with a handful of others still awaiting clarification. Microsoft has spent $69 billion on Activision Blizzard, so now it calls the shots when it comes to juggernaut franchise, Call of Duty. Of course, previously, starting with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 in 2015, Sony had marketing dibs on the series, which meant it could advertise annual entries in the FPS outing specifically for PS4 and latterly PS5. It also would enjoy some small benefits, like early access to betas, exclusive cosmetics, and, in some instances, even extra modes.
It’s tough to be a Dragon Age fan in 2024. It’s been 10 years since Dragon Age: Inquisition, and BioWare has changed a lot since then, having made a very different type of game in Anthem that had fans (and former staffers) fretting that studio had turned away from its focus on narrative-centric games. That might be why, when I saw the first hour of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in a hands-off demonstration at Summer Game Fest, the game’s creative director John Epler said the word “narrative” to me at least a dozen times, as though trying to reassure me this game would not let me down on that score. I ate it up every time, grinning and nodding like a bobblehead. Because, honestly? That’s all I really want Dragon Age: The Veilguard to be, and I don’t think I’m alone.
Developer id Software revealed Doom: The Dark Ages at the Xbox Games Showcase with a sizzling debut trailer, and a couple of the new weapons have left something of a lasting impression. Speaking at Summer Game Fest, studio creative director Hugo Martin says the studio set out to "make the weapons feel like the most powerful you've ever held in a Doom game, like that Skull Crusher you saw in the teaser."
For me, sandbox games are never better when there’s an inherent chaos about to erupt at any given second. In a literal sandbox that might be anything from a kid burying a freshly-laid turd like a mischievous cat ready to be stepped on by an unsuspecting trespasser, gathering handfuls of grit to lob in a another kids’ eyes or swallowing a bunch of sand (hopefully turd-free) in pursuit of alchemising diamonds in their stomach. There don’t seem to be turds of any kind in upcoming sandbox RPG Streets of Fortuna, but that’s about the only thing that this ambitious “megasim” appears to be missing in its sprawling go-anywhere, do-anything open world.
