World of Warcraft Classic just teased some of the first details about how it would preserve characters and content from Season of Discovery after the experiment runs its course. Season of Discovery may not last forever, but World of Warcraft already has plans to keep some of the itemization from the popular Classic servers after the season ends.
Season of Discovery is World of Warcraft's newest experimental Classic experience that mixes up the formula with new content, secrets, and features throughout the game. However, like World of Warcraft's Season of Mastery before it, Season of Discovery has an expiration date. While World of Warcraft previously confirmed players would be able to transfer their characters to other servers, fans have wondered exactly how it would work, given the bevy of new things in Season of Discovery.
During an interview with Dexerto, World of Warcraft Classic lead software engineer Nora Valletta and senior game producer Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield shed light on some early ideas for what would happen at the end of Season of Discovery. “The season will come to an end eventually,” Valletta admitted, “whereas the characters that you’ve created and invested time into and leveled, their stories don’t have to end with the season.” Valletta envisioned what she referred to as “an interesting place” for characters to go to let them keep some features from Season of Discovery that are “very similar to Classic Era, but not existing Classic Era realms.” While nothing is set in stone yet, it sounds like fans may not have to bid farewell to all of their exciting Season of Discovery features at the end of the experiment.
Greenfield shared his own thoughts on the matter as well. “It would be a shame if [the new discoveries, narrative content, and raids] went away and were never available again,” he said. Luckily, he confirmed Season of Discovery was made with modularity in mind so the best parts of the new WoW Classic experience could be preserved. “We’re building it in such a way that all this content is sort of modular enough that we could flip it on in a different version of WoW at a different point, and maybe adjust it or scale it up,” he explained. “We really want to keep an eye on what’s well received and what are the things that we probably don’t want to carry forward.”
“The season will come to an end eventually. Whereas the characters that you’ve created and invested time into and leveled, their stories don’t have to end with the season.”
When Season of Mastery ended, fans had a few months to freely transfer their characters over to Classic Era realms. From the developer’s words, it is possible World of Warcraft may make new evergreen servers for Season of Discovery characters to go after the
