Every video game developer out there will tell you that there are a lot of cool ideas that, for a variety of reasons, are cut from their respective games and never see the light of day. Nintendo is no exception, and with a series as long-running as Super Mario, you know that there's a treasure trove of cut content out there waiting to be discovered.
One such concept that we already know of is Wapeach, sometimes referred to as Warupichi. She was a character that was pitched as an arch-rival to Princess Peach, the same way in which Wario and Waluigi are the arch-rivals of Mario and Luigi. Alongside Waluigi, she was to be introduced in the spinoff title Mario Tennis, but was ultimately scrapped by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto at the last minute.
While she may not have had an actual form, fans of the Mario series have kept her alive in name, creating fan art and original designs imagining what she may have looked like. Fortunately, we no longer have to use our imaginations, as Waluigi creator Fumihide Aoki recently shared concept art and a full 3D model of Wapeach on his Instagram account on Friday, giving us our first official look at the character almost 23 years after her inception.
The concept art shared by Aoki depicts Wapeach in a full body outfit, cones where her ears would be, and some massive black boots. There are several images of her from different angles, one of which is holding a tennis racket, while another is holding an axe that would make even the burliest of lumberjacks blush in embarrassment. When asked why she was holding an axe, Aoki says it's because he thought the idea of the character being "cute and scary" was interesting.
Aoki goes on to reveal even more details about the character, including the idea that she would've been an authority figure, dishing out the orders to Wario and Waluigi. He also reveals that he even wanted to make an arch-rival for Yoshi that would've been a companion for Wapeach, who would have been a dragon with horns and wings.
As for why Wapeach was scrapped, Aoki says that the overall idea of an evil version of Princess Peach was probably something Nintendo and Miyamoto didn't even want to consider, given how innocent and royal she was during the early games. Thanks to more interesting interpretations of Peach that we've seen in the Mario movie and the upcoming title Princess Peach: Showtime!, there's still a chance we could see Wapeach in an official Mario game yet.

It’s easy to look at the video game community and think everyone working in it is “developing the games they want to do.” But, in truth, that’s not what happens many times. Yes, plenty of developers make the titles they desire, but other times, it’s not so simple. Sometimes, the developers aren’t in control because their publishers push them to where they want to go. Other times, it’s a question of money and whether they make the “best games” or the “profitable ones.” For the creator of Danganronpa, Kazutaka Kodaka, was very clear about which side of this coin he falls on.

In the gaming space, the evolution of a franchise over the course of years is vital for it to stay relevant. If you can’t maintain a certain quality level, things will go badly for you. But, if you take the time to reinvent yourself, the results can speak for themselves. A great example from 2023 is Mario, who had a “wonder-ful” new title showcase how Nintendo isn’t afraid to change things up on a large scale. Last year had an equally big shift via God of War Ragnarok and how it depicted Kratos and those around him.
The original DOOM is 30 years old now. That means it has been a little over thirty years since Nintendo turned down Id’s offer to port their games to the PC and began a chain reaction that would result in Carmack, Romero, and co. creating the FPS genre. Thanks, Nintendo!
