Thousands of jobs have been cut across the entire games industry in a wave of mass layoffs in 2024 so far, and that number is continuing to steadily grow. Ubisoft is the latest company to have eliminated positions, having cut 45 jobs in a fresh round of layoffs, as reported by GameSpot.
Having laid off over 120 people last November, the company recently confirmed that it’s cutting 45 jobs in its Global Publishing and Asia-Pacific divisions in order to “streamline operations” and “enhance collective efficiency.”
“Over the past few months, every team within Ubisoft has been exploring ways to streamline our operations and enhance our collective efficiency so that we are better positioned for success in the long term,” Ubisoft said in a statement. “In this context, today we announced that we are further reorganizing our Global Publishing central and APAC structures to adapt them to the market evolution with a more efficient and agile approach. Those changes will impact 45 positions overall. These are not decisions taken lightly and we are providing comprehensive support for our impacted colleagues. We also want to share our utmost gratitude and respect for their many contributions to the company.”
A number of companies in the games industry have been hit with layoffs this year so far. Microsoft cut 1,900 jobs in January, which was followed by layoffs at PlayStation (900 people), Electronic Arts (670 people), Sega (240 people), and more. Earlier this year, Riot Games laid off roughly 530 people, while since June last year, Embracer Group has cut about 1,400 roles since last June.
Other companies that have suffered layoffs this year include Gearbox Entertainment, Certain Affinity, Deck Nine, Behaviour Interactive, People Can Fly, and Thunderful Group, among others.

Rainbow Six Siege's «Reputation» mechanic is still reportedly seeing a number of problems with its implementation, notably incorrectly flagging players for harmful in-game behavior. Honor systems have been a staple of plenty of online games, encouraging players to practice good sportsmanship and treat fellow players with respect. Competitive games like League of Legends have often featured special rewards tied to honor systems, including Chests for players to acquire new League of Legends skins. Now, Siege's honor system is seeing a few hiccups.
Since unveiling the eye-watering $130 Ultimate Edition of Star Wars Outlaws last week, Ubisoft has been under fire from fans furious a full-priced single-player game would even warrant a Season Pass in the first place. Worse, acquiring the Season Pass is the only way to «play the exclusive Jabba's Gambit mission at launch».
Ubisoft has released a free trial for Assassin’s Creed Mirage on PC and consoles.
A spokesperson for Ubisoft addressed concerns over Star Wars Outlaws' controversial Jabba the Hutt DLC mission. Fans of a galaxy far, far away have rallied against the publisher for the price point of its Star Wars Outlaws special edition packages, which come with price tags ranging from $109.99 to $129.99. The community was particularly displeased with the reveal of an exclusive DLC mission for Jabba the Hutt, which will only be playable for users who purchased one of the special bundles or the season pass.
Ubisoft has commented on the controversy surrounding Star Wars Outlaws after it was revealed that one of its missions will be behind a paywall from day one. Ubisoft argues that the mission in question, Jabba's Gambit, is "optional", defending the decision to lock it to a season pass.
Ubisoft has responded to the ongoing backlash against the Star Wars Outlaws season pass, insisting Jabba the Hutt is part of the experience for all players.
Since its latest story trailer debuted, Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars Outlaws has received some interesting reactions. However, several have spoken out against the Jabba’s Gambit mission, which is playable at launch but only for those who own the Season Pass. The only way to get it is by paying $129.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
Ubisoft has responded to the outcry over Star Wars Outlaws' Jabba the Hutt mission, which will be available at the game's launch only to owners of the game's pricey Gold or Ultimate Editions.
The games industry continues to hit us with depressing lessons of how fickle digital ownership can be, with everything from DRM to servers being taken down and more serving as constant threats to your ownership of games you’ve purchased with your hard-earned money. Another game is now seemingly hammering that point home.
Star Wars Outlaws won't make players climb towers in the open world to reveal parts of the map, unlike nearly every Ubisoft game since the original Assassin's Creed.
