Ubisoft is Reportedly Revoking The Crew 1 Licenses for Players Who Purchased the Game

Tom Clancy's XDefiant is almost upon us. Ubisoft is releasing the free-to-play first-person shooter on May 21 for the Xbox Series X|S, the PS5 and PC through Ubisoft Connect. The developer is kicking things off with the preseason version of the game, which is scheduled to last for six weeks before XDefiant's first season officially starts. Ubisoft announced the game way back in 2021, promising team-based matches with a focus on gunplay that will include elements from other games in the Tom Clancy universe.

XDefiant, Ubisoft's free-to-play first-person shooter, finally has a release date. After hitting delays, the game's preseason will launch on May 21 across PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X via Ubisoft Connect. According to the studio, XDefiant will feature five different game modes across 14 maps at launch. Players will start out with 24 weapons and 44 attachments and can try out five playable factions inspired by Ubisoft franchises.

Players are review bombing The Crew 2 in response to Ubisoft's recent decision to shut down support for 2014's The Crew. Nearly six years after its release, The Crew 2 landed in the middle of a heated conflict between the franchise's longtime fans and its own creators. The online-only racing game has since seen a spike in negative reviews, reflecting the tumultuous relationship between its player base and the studio behind the series' development.

Martin Hultberg - once the director behind Ubisoft's looting, shooting The Division - now has his eyes on the fledgling get-in-and-go extraction shooter genre, which he reckons can still reach the "mass market."

Questions were no doubt asked about the future of Watch Dogs when the latest game in the series, Watch Dogs Legion, underperformed both critically and commercially (even though its initial sales numbers might have hinted otherwise). The PS5 and PS4 open world title, which first launched in 2020, saw a lot of improvement through post-launch updates and DLC, but the damage had been done long before Ubisoft got around to fixing things.

The future of the Watch Dogs franchise appears shaky following a new rumor suggesting Ubisoft has canceled several projects related to the series. This news comes after the middling critical and commercial reception of the last entry in the Watch Dogs franchise, 2020's Legion.

2014’s The Crew was the first project for developer Ivory Tower, which was founded in Lyon, France, in 2007 and later acquired by Ubisoft in late 2015. While it may have been the debut game for the studio, a number of Ivory Tower’s staff formerly hailed from Lyon’s Eden Games (including Ivory Tower’s three founders) and had previous experience on the first three instalments of the V-Rally series, the PlayStation version of Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed, and the trendsetting Test Drive Unlimited. As such, there was a good deal of optimism around The Crew.

A reliable Ubisoft leaker has claimed that Watch Dogs is "dead and buried" as a series, so don't get your hopes up about seeing Marcus, Wrench, and Aiden again.

It's always sad to see a well-liked game completely shut down, especially when it was still being enjoyed by a handful of dedicated fans. That's exactly what happened with The Crew, an open world racing game that was released all the way back in 2015. Being a completely online title, once developer Ubisoft pulled the plug on the game's servers at the end of last month, it became completely unplayable for all owners.
