Fortnite is the highest-grossing game in the first quarter of 2024, according to a report published by Newzoo. The year 2024 for the games industry has been marked by events such as layoffs, Gearbox Software's acquisition by Take-Two Interactive, and the farewell to Nintendo 3DS and Wii U online services. Meanwhile, new releases like Palworld and Helldivers 2 hit the shelves, sharing space with popular releases like Fortnite and Valorant.
Palworld took the world by storm by showing a different spin on the monster-collecting game genre, quickly becoming a hit on Steam. Helldivers 2 became a new favorite among shooter fans, placing players on the Galaxy's last offensive line. Another title highly anticipated by gamers was Dragon's Dogma 2, which, 12 years after the release of its predecessor, brings a new fantasy world to explore. With so many games to play, a new report revealed which ones pushed sales at the start of the year.
Newzoo has released a new report revealing the top-grossing games in the first quarter of 2024 on PC and consoles, and Fortnite has landed at the top of the list. In second place is EA Sports FC 24, the first game since the end of the partnership between EA and FIFA. Helldivers 2 is a big success, and Arrowhead Game Studios' shooter confirmed its popularity by taking third place. In fourth and fifth place are Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and NBA 2K24, with the Newzoo report listing Madden NFL 25 (6th), Dragon's Dogma 2 (7th), Palworld (8th), Valorant (9th), and Rainbox Six Siege (10th).
The report published by Newzoo covers game purchases and in-app spending in the US and Europe's five largest gaming markets — Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and Spain. Fortnite topped the sales in all countries, and despite EA FC Sports 24's slow start, the game was the standout in Europe, accounting for 8.3% of total revenue. Newzoo also revealed the top-grossing games released in 2024 in the first quarter, with Helldivers 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Palworld taking the top three spots. WWE 2K24 and Persona 3 Reloaded appear in fourth and fifth, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (6th), Tekken 8 (7th), Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (8th), Skull and Bones (9th), and MLB The Show 24 (10th) making the list.
According to Newzoo, the global games market has generated $184 billion in revenue in 2023, while this year's figures are expected to rise to $189.3 billion. Gamers are waiting to know whether these numbers will be reached since other anticipated 2024 game releases are still coming, including Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Black Myth: Wukong, and Metaphor: ReFantazio.

The last few weeks I’ve been watching quite a few YouTube videos (thanks, Evo Japan), and noticing that adverts during videos a) seem to pop up every 30 seconds or so and b) then last for an unskippable 30 to 60 seconds. My frustration with being bombarded by YouTube ads in videos for which I pay nothing to watch - meaning that I understand the necessity for ads of some kind to support creators and pay server bills - came to mind as I read about EA’s plans to explore inserting advertising into games, which I pay up to £70 a pop to play.
Some fresh astral god trivia from my accidental molar expedition a few weeks back: each of the Maw's teeth is different. Some form a fractal baleen network of crosshatched layers disappearing backward into the vanishing point; others are shaped like lockpicks, raccoon heads and semi-detached houses. This week's new game releases are no less motley and misshapen, though thankfully not quite as heavily varnished with plaque: there's something in the shop for everyone, I think.

A new report is bad news for subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, as data suggests that spending on those services has been stalled for nearly a year. Microsoft and Sony have both bet big on PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, with Microsoft in particular going all-in on Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass is a cornerstone of Microsoft's current gaming strategy, with the company bolstering the service through the release of massive, day one games.
With CI Games and Hexworks releasing the final update for Lords of the Fallen, the Souls-like action RPG is allegedly bound for Game Pass in the last week of May.

The former NPD Group (now named “Circana”) has released its full North American sales data for March, and it seems like it was an up-and-down month for the industry. Players spent $4.9 billion on games, additional content, and hardware in March, up 4 percent year-on-year. This increase came from mobile and software spending, as hardware sales were down 31 percent year-on-year with PS5 #1 in terms of unit and dollar sales, Switch #2 in terms of unit sales, and Xbox Series X/S #2 in terms of dollar sales.
A new batch of games have been announced for Game Pass in May, including five that are playable on PC. There are siblings, felines, reapers, and a Croft. I'm struggling to identify a theme.
