In November, I reviewed the PlayStation Portal. I was mixed on Sony’s streaming handheld at the time, frustrated with a corner-cutting execution of a good idea. It seemed like a poor value compared to simply slapping a cheaper Backbone controller on a phone. As is often the case with tech reviews, though, I only had a short window to test it out where I was more focused on the more objective side of what the Portal does and doesn’t do. Would my feelings change when I was using it naturally?
The PlayStation Portal Is Back In Stock Once Again At Best Buy

Three years after the launch of the PS5, PlayStation released the PlayStation Portal. A handheld device you pair with your PS5 so you can play games remotely, provided you have a stable WiFi connection, your PS5 is turned on, and it isn't being used for something else. Those limitations resulted in a lot of people slating the Portal when it was revealed. However, the inability to find them since then has confirmed a lot more people are into it.
The Portal's pre-orders sold out fast, and stock of the device has been snapped up almost immediately every time it has popped back up. The only time it stayed in stock for longer than a few minutes was directly through PlayStation earlier this year, but even the creators of the device sold out of its second wave of stock eventually. Now the Portal is back at Best Buy, but you'll need to be quick if you want one.

It has been more than three months, and quite a few restocks, since the Portal launched, so you'd have to think eventually, much like the PS5, they won't be in such high demand that only those keeping tabs on Portal restocks will be able to get one. Perhaps today is that day, and even if you're reading this a few hours after the article went live, the Portal might still be in stock at Best Buy.
The PlayStation Portal is a handheld companion to Sony's PlayStation 5 console. Based around the features of a DualSense controller and Remote Play, it features an eight-inch LCD screen at 1080p resolution capable of 60fps, a headphone jack for wired audio.
This feels like a combination of people wanting the Portal, but also PlayStation underestimating just how popular its handheld device would be. It might have even eased off on production after the negative reactions to the Portal's reveal, and it has been playing catch up ever since. That many people wanting your high-end, pretty expensive device is a great problem for PlayStation to have, of course, but the studio would much prefer having enough Portals to go around so everyone who wants to buy one can have one.
A busy few months for new PlayStation hardware has now come to an end, and we might not see anything new from the studio on that front until the rumored PS5 Pro. PlayStation is rumored to be releasing a more powerful version of its current-gen console before the end of 2024, although it hasn't confirmed that to be the case yet.
