The Sonic series is never in a rush to make many callbacks to the infamous Sonic '06. This is understandable, given that the game was universally poorly received and largely seen as the worst Sonic game ever released.
However, the Knuckles TV series just bucked this trend, throwing in a reference to the antagonist, Iblis. The character design is clearly taken from his appearance in Sonic '06 too, making this a pretty deep cut that won't mean much to most viewers.
This was spotted by Twitter user AlenWG, who has compiled a huge thread on all of the different references and easter eggs in the Knuckles show. To make a long story short, there's a lot of them, with even lesser-known entries getting a nod.
In Sonic '06's case, it's obviously very infamous in the fanbase, but more casual viewers probably aren't aware of the absolute stink it left on the franchise. Even younger fans of the games wouldn't have been around for its launch, so they might now know what all of the fuss was about. In fact, according to the Sonic Wiki, this is actually Iblis' first appearance since being mentioned in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 2008.
Sonic '06's actual title is just Sonic the Hedgehog. Since that would make things very confusing, it is almost exclusively referred to as Sonic '06 instead, since it launched in 2006 to coincide with the series' 15th anniversary.
Unfortunately, outside of a few neat references being spotted by fans, the conversation about the Knuckles show online is far from positive. As soon as it dropped in North America yesterday, fans were immediately disappointed, particularly with its focus on the human characters instead of the titular echidna. In other words, Knuckles doesn't have enough Knuckles.
At the very least, fans have the next film to look forward to this winter, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set to hit theatres on December 20. It's said to "take a lot" from the fan favourite Sonic Adventure 2, which includes its main theme song, Live and Learn by Crush 40.

Fallout's popular TV show is full of mysteries that the show doesn't really explain, ranging from who actually dropped the first atomic bomb, to what the heck the Snake Oil Salesman's serum actually is. Another mystery that the Fallout TV show throws up is the location of the Brotherhood of Steel's headquarters, but one fan thinks they may have figured it out.
Microids has announced The Smurfs: Dreams, another 3D platformer starring the small Belgian blue folks. Coming to both PS5 and PS4 later this year, the game is giving off strong Super Mario 3D World/Sackboy: A Big Adventure energy, as you can see in the announcement trailer above.
The Sonic cinematic universe expanded beyond the big screen last week as all six episodes of the Knuckles spinoff show sped exclusively onto Paramount Plus. The show has been receiving mixed reviews so far. An audience score of 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes is pretty great, but the apparent lack of Knuckles in the show hasn't been sitting well with a lot of Sonic fans. Whether you love the show and you'd like to own a physical version, or you don't have Paramount and you're waiting for other ways to watch it, pre-orders for its Blu-ray and DVD versions are already available.
A pair of recent reports have suggested that Nintendo’s successor to the Switch console — which we, along with everyone else, are calling Switch 2 for now — will have Joy-Con controllers that attach to the body of the device using strong, electronically-controlled magnets, rather than the sliding rail system used by the Switch.
The first episode of Paramount’s Knuckles TV show has been made available for free on YouTube.
Shadow of the Ninja Reborn has been given a release date of August 29th, SEGA and NatsumeAtari have confirmed. The game originally released 33 years ago for the NES, and the original team has got back together to remaster Shadow of the Ninja for a new audience. You can see the gameplay in the trailer below.
Knuckles, Paramount Plus’ spinoff series of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, could have been a shameless IP cash-in. And the premiere isn’t far off! Following the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we find Sonic and Miles “Tails” Prower living an idyllic life in Montana, and helping their new red echidna friend get the hang of Earth life. Without the budget for a big action spectacle, it’s mostly a kid sitcom with the Sonic gang — until it very much is not. In the subsequent five episodes, Knuckles (voiced again by Idris Elba) pairs up with dimwitted Green Hills sheriff Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) on a road trip to Nevada, where they both hope to find meaning in the world. The result is basically Tommy Boy for Sega buffs. It’s bananas.
The Knuckles series is out now on Paramount+, and some viewers have already made their way through all six episodes. However, few are impressed, as Sonic fans complain that Knuckles barely features in his own show.
As a story about stories, it’s no wonder that Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman would have some characters that other creators would want to pick up and play with. Sandman spinoff comics have starred Dream’s sister Death, the strange denizens of the Dreaming, and even Lucifer himself, leading to the the cult success of an entire LuciferTV series years before a Netflix series adapting The Sandman itself.
The massive success of the Fallout TV show is inspiring millions of people to play the games on which the Amazon Prime series is based.
Well, that didn’t take long. After tech demos from the likes of Nvidia inviting us to chat with NPCs whose entire conversations are generated by AI, it looks like the first game built wholly on that controversial idea is due to arrive this year. Uncover the Smoking Gun puts its ChatGPT-powered dialogue front and centre, as the player’s detective interviews robot suspects to solve a murder case.
