To say there’s been a great deal of hype leading up to this point for one of the first Microsoft/Bethesda post-merger is a bit of an understatement. There’s been a lot said about one of the first feature games of its new era, Starfield. While most of the game’s coverage has been largely positive, the talk on behind-the-scenes matters hasn’t always been.
Sony Doesn’t Trust Microsoft After Starfield’s Exclusive Release
An interesting takeaway from this week’s release of Starfield is the news that Microsoft had moved in on said merger upon hearing that the game was initially set to be a PlayStation exclusive. It’s not without irony, then, that it is now an Xbox/PC exclusive.
Now, to the game itself, it’s been an incredible journey to get to this point. Having pushed through an approaching 20 hours logged in-game, everything about Starfield’s history just to reach launch day is even more impressive – and continues to grow in this respect with every passing hour I spend flying through the vast reaches of space.
If I’m honest, I’ve just about got my feet wet when it comes to all things in the vast expanse of a world that is Starfield. That said, it’s more of a universe than your standard world-building that Bethesda is focusing on here. There’s a lot to take in as you’re finding your feet while at the same time attempting to find your place in this universe, as it were.
Players can choose several different paths to take very early on. However, not knowing the complete set of objectives and outcomes, things can just as quickly change or, more likely, veer off course as you progress. There are three main choices on your path. The first is to join the “good guy” forces as a ranger or similar, one of many options, and attempt to maintain peace and order across the galaxy – or galaxies. The second is a bit more on the nose – aiming to perform a similar function as the Rangers, but only this time in the form of a mercenary who works for cash. It’s perhaps much simpler in the long run as you attempt to gain resources to upgrade your weapons, gear and ship. And lastly, there’s the option of a type of outlaw or space pirate. I haven’t explored much of the latter, as it takes a far greater level of planning, most notably as to which solar systems you can visit, let alone dealing with all the thievery and the like.
The game’s developers have indicated an estimated 30 to 40 hours of gameplay time to finish the main storyline. However, while flying through space collecting various clues to complete an objective, I’ve found myself some two to three hours off course on the main story. Starfield Review - Written In The Stars
My Starfield review-in-progress went up 11 days ago, on August 31. I had made my way through a good chunk of the main quest and was getting my bearings in Bethesda's gigantic universe. Now that I'm on the other side of dozens of hours spent galavanting through the galaxy, much of what I said before still holds true, and other than some small nitpicks, Starfield is truly out of this world. And now that pun is officially out of the way.

Starfield Review in Progress – It has Skyrim’s eyes and Fallout’s nose
It’s a little bit funny to think that, while Starfield features a brand new sci-fi galaxy to explore, it was also almost jokingly a known quantity for gamers well before launch. Bethesda Game Studios has a type of game that they make, and while Starfield’s story is of an adventure to find the unknown, the actual game itself feels immediately familiar.
