The classic Star Wars: Battlefront games are coming back in a blockbuster collection later this year. In 2004, Destroy All Humans developer Pandemic Studios released the original Star Wars: Battlefront, which allowed players to recreate famous battles from the Star Wars movies. A sequel was released the following year to coincide with Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, adding content from that movie as well as playable ship battles in space.
A handful of spin-off games were later produced for handheld platforms and mobile devices, but a full-fledged Star Wars: Battlefront 3 would ultimately be canceled due to issues between LucasArts and developer Free Radical. Playtest footage of this unmade Battlefront sequel was eventually released online, but the series would ultimately instead see a reboot in 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront. Star Wars Battlefront 2 would launch a couple of years later and bring in elements from the rest of the Sequel Trilogy, but DICE later confirmed that it would not be developing a third game for now.
In the meantime, gamers will be able to dive back into the classic Star Wars: Battlefront titles, as revealed during this week’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase livestream. Longtime Star Wars port studio Aspyr is developing Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, whichwill be released on March 14. This bundle of the original two Battlefront games will also be available on PlayStation consoles and contains all the action-packed gameplay of those titles, with some additional content thrown in like playable Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto characters and a Jabba’s Palace map.
Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection will also incorporate Hero Assault on every map. This mode was only available on Tatooine in the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 and allows players to battle as iconic characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader across classic Star Wars locations like the Death Star and Naboo. The collection also features massive online multiplayer with up to 64 players, allowing fans to recreate the large-scale skirmishes of the movies.
Everything else fans loved about the original Star Wars: Battlefront games, such as Galactic Conquest and Battlefront 2’s trooper-centric story campaign, will be present and accounted for in the new collection. With DICE’s rebooted Star Wars Battlefront series seemingly on hold for the time being, players itching to experience some old-school action will be able to do so in the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, which will blast onto Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on March 14.
