Starfield's early access starts today, letting anyone who picked up a premium version of the game play it five days before its full launch. But even if this is Bethesda's first new universe in years, some things never change - the playerbase still wants to wreck chaos wherever they go. So, as always, the devs have put in some limitations on who we can harm.
As discovered by TheGamer's own Jade King, you can't kill your parents in Starfield. It's not even that they have an essential tag as some NPCs did in Fallout 3, Skyrim, etc. No, they literally just cannot be harmed. They don't even seem to mind you spraying their home with bullets in an effort to gun them down. They're very understanding folks who are just happy to see you.

In the video below, you can see that the player does what we've all done from time to time - save the game so we can kill some innocents for no reason whatsoever. Unfortunately, the parents were saved from this rampage, and hardly even cared about the mess in their living room. Or, you know, the murderous behaviour of their child.
Given that having parents in the first place is optional, it's a little surprising to see that they're indestructible like this. They'll only be alive in the first place if you select the Kid Stuff trait when you're creating your character. This has the slight drawback of taking away 2 percent of your credits every week so you can support them, but it does mean you're the first Bethesda protagonist to have a normal family, so that's pretty great. Well, I'm assuming it's a normal family set-up - I haven't got far enough yet.
I digress - not being able to off your folks is probably a way to ensure you don't have a way to back out of the trait once you've picked it. If they're dead, there's no one to send your money back to, giving you their apartment with no drawbacks. If that was your plan all along, then clever. But not clever enough, it seems.
If you're hoping to start playing Starfield as soon as possible and get in on the murderous fun, then you'll have to upgrade to one of the premium editions of the game. Right now, anyone with the standard edition (including those of you playing on Game Pass), will have to wait until September 6. Incidentally, this is the same day that Baldur's Gate 3 fully launches on PS5. Yeah, RPG fans aren't going to have any spare time for the rest of the year.
