Slay The Princess Devs Allow Piracy If You Can't Afford Their Game

Slay the Princess has become a surprise indie hit, spreading through word of mouth to reach a wider audience. In our review, Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley gave it four out of five stars, and it even made it onto a couple of our Game of the Year lists. With all of the buzz going around, many are looking into trying it out themselves - and now the devs are urging them to do it properly.
In a tweet, the devs caution potential fans to avoid watching playthroughs online. Instead, they say that Slay the Princess is best experienced going in blind, especially on your first playthrough. In fact, they go as far as to say that if you can't afford to buy the game right now, you should pirate it instead.
"The game is at its best if your first experience is playing it yourself instead of watching someone else's play-through," reads the tweet on the official account. "And if [money] is an issue, pirate it and buy a copy later when you have money if you liked it!"
We don't often see game devs permit would-be players to pirate their games, but it's not unheard of. Typically, it's done in more exceptional circumstances, like when Loop Hero's developer permitted fans to pirate the game, as it was unavailable to purchase in many regions. In the case of Slay the Princess, it's all in aid of retaining the ideal way to play the game, even if that means the devs aren't making money from your first playthrough.
"You can only play for the first time once, and the experience won't be the same if you're looking through the lens of someone else's choices".
Of course, if you can afford it, you should chuck them the £14.99 to pick the game up on Steam (currently on sale for £13.49). Slay the Princess' Steam reviews are Overwhelmingly Positive right now, and it sits at 90 on Metacritic, so if that's anything to go by, you're in for a good time.
Slay the Princess launched on October 23, 2023, and is available on PC. It was developed by Black Tabby Games, a two-person team.
