It's weird to say it out loud, but Skyrim is 13 years old. We can debate about whether that makes it retro or just pull out our grey hairs in frustration, the point is that Skyrim is getting on a bit. But one fan decided to turn the clock back even further and imagine what it'd look like if we were celebrating its 27th birthday this year instead.
Obviously, there are '90s Elder Scrolls games already - Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, and Redguard. So we don't have to imagine what the series would look like 30 years ago. Instead, Pertrinax has reimagined Skyrim itself as a classic RPG, as we see Daggerfall-inspired UI in place of the slicker, more modern style, with 2D pixelated sprites swinging their weapons in all their janky might.
The khajiit were much more humanoid in Daggerfall (and straight-up human in Arena). They had fur and tails like the cat people of more modern Elder Scrolls games, but completely humanoid faces - imagine a khajiit with Ulfric's head. Unsettling, to say the least.
The video starts like any good Skyrim clip, with Ralof waking us up on our way to Helgen. Instead of the simple and to-the-point subtitles, his words come to life via styilised dialogue boxes.
After waking up dazed, confused, and face-to-face with the nord of all nords, we see a whole host of different iconic Skyrim scenes:
And lastly, a giant's camp, where the player is pelted off into the sky. See you in Starfield, bud.
This isn't the only Bethesda game Pertinax has reimagined as a '90s RPG. Shortly after their Skyrim video, they uploaded one for Fallout: New Vegas as well.
It's not like the classic, isometric Fallout games, though. Instead, it takes inspiration from those first-person dungeon crawlers of yesteryear, as we see the player in real-time combat, throwing dynamite while gunning down baddies.
Regardless, the choppy 2D sprites and retro UI give it that classic feel, even if it isn't a classic Fallout feel.

Despite being over 12 years old, remains one of the most popular RPGs and continues to enjoy a massive player base. However, along with the epic quests and classic dialogue, there are more than a fair few bug and glitches. While some of these have been fixed by Bethesda over the years, there are still a surprising amount that remain, much to the annoyance and amusement of players.

For the record, we didn’t plan two stories about items you can get for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to come in back-to-back days. Life decided to have a little fun with us, and we don’t mind. Yesterday, we discussed how Square Enix Reward Program members could get a special glitter globe featuring the Gold Saucer from the upcoming RPG. It was cute and adorable, and we’re sure some of you have already subscribed to the program so you can get it or are cashing in points to ensure you get it. But, if you’re looking for something a bit more “substantial,” then perhaps Amazon is where you go to get the game.
When it comes to video games, many who play them don’t just want the “memories” of playing them; they want items in the real world that’ll help them remember those memories in a different way. Pre-order items are a big deal in this respect, as people will pay out the nose to get unique items that can only be bought through these special deals. Square Enix decided to up the ante with the upcoming release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth by offering its Reward Members the chance to get a special glitter globe featuring the Gold Saucer from the upcoming title.
