Unfortunately, the deal between the two firms could not materialize, with a tipster sharing that there was a scarce supply of the chipset, amongst other reasons.

When the Dimensity 9000 was announced back in 2021, MediaTek did not mass produce a sufficient number of these to be widely available for several customers, with Revegnus posting on X that the estimated figure was just 10 million units. Given that Samsung ships around three times the number of Galaxy S units annually, the deal would eventually fall out. However, there were other opportunities for Samsung to partner with MediaTek for its future silicon. With the Dimensity 9300, there was a possibility, but the chipset maker had already allocated all available shipments to its Chinese clientele.
Additionally, with an estimated 30 to 35 million units produced, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 supply would still be inadequate for Samsung, given that it had already signed deals with other customers. Also, even if the company somehow managed to produce significant units for the Korean giant, it is not like Qualcomm would be sitting idly by, as the San Diego firm had already signed a multi-year agreement to be the chipset supplier for the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S26 range. In fact, 40 percent of Qualcomm’s smartphone chipset revenue in Q4 2023 was thanks to Samsung, indicating a symbiotic business relationship between the two.
Then again, with each Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 said to cost $200, it is an expensive arrangement for Samsung, and with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 said to be more costly than its predecessor, things can get dicey for the Korean manufacturer going forward. However, as stated above, it is a symbiotic relationship, meaning that Samsung and Qualcomm both need each other to thrive in this competitive market, so for the near future, the tipster does not see MediaTek entering the fold anytime soon, but that does not mean that negotiations cannot happen behind closed doors.
