Simulation games can be some of the most rewarding games to excel at, but they’ve never quite found a natural home on consoles like they have on PCs over the years. That isn’t to say that attempts haven’t been made over the decades, but results have been mixed with ports that weren’t fully-optimized for console gaming hardware and in some cases, that’s led to games being worse to play on modern hardware than even older hardware. Games like Planet Coaster ring that bell because with a newer and theoretical console-optimized experience, it still never felt natural on a controller. Meanwhile, the original Theme Park on the Sega Genesis felt pretty natural with its controls reworked and a very similar premise.
We have seen several RollerCoaster Tycoon games on the market over the years, but few on console, with the original Xbox getting a highly-optimized version of RollerCoaster Tycoon with reworked controls and all of the original game’s content packs as well. The isometric viewpoint was retained and the game’s performance was bumped up to 60 fps. It was perfectly-tuned for a controller and felt very natural with a controller and the new RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures Deluxe aims to do something similar 20 years later. – only across far more kinds of hardware. While that redone RCT only hit one console, it also hit very well. Now, RCT is back with a revamp to RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures with a slew of new content.
In the case of Deluxe, it lives up to the moniker with 80 new rides added to the lineup – including some seasonal rides. This brings the overall total of rides available to 200, which runs the gamut from things like coasters to secondary rides to offer something for every patron. Having a console-centric interface ensures that players will have fun with any of the game’s available environments – including jungle tropics, desert canyons, snowy mountains and even a moonscape to bounce around and have fun with. Back in the day, you had a few different environments to work with and one mode to play. Here, you have three overall modes to enjoy. Sandbox would be the most similar to just doing whatever you wanted with a consequence-free experience with Theme Park, while Adventure mode has the overarching goal being success and scenario mode is fantastic for anyone who wants to enjoy a more casual approach or who wants a bit more guidance.
RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures Deluxe is available now on Xbox One, Xbox Series, PS4, PS5, and Switch – with a physical release coming on November 3 on consoles as well. Those who picked up the original release of Adventures may would to grab it again for the new content, while those who missed out can grabbed the whole shebang now for $39.99 either digitally
