Harmonix has announced that it is ending support for Rock Band 4 after eight years of DLC and moving its attention towards Fortnite Festival, calling it "the place to be".
As the sudden death of Guitar Hero Live taught us in 2018, the age of music games with plastic instruments has sadly been and gone. That being said, there has been at least one game that's been keeping the genre alive all this time - Rock Band 4. Harmonix's last big entry in the series has somehow managed to be supported with DLC ever since it was released in 2015, with over 3,000 songs having been released as DLC in those eight years.
Although it seemed that Rock Band 4 might just end up being supported for the rest of time, that dream has sadly come to an end. After an unprecedented amount of post-launch support over two console generations, Harmonix has announced in a blog post on its website that support for the game is coming to an end.
Over on its blog, Harmonix's product manager, Daniel Sussman, shared an update on the game's future. In the update, Sussman confirms that January 25 will mark the last DLC release of "the RB4 era", but noted that all of the other online services that the game has, such as Rivals seasons and online play, will continue as normal.
Sussman noted that the work he's done on Rock Band 4 has been a "high point in my professional life", and said that going through everyone's song requests and seeing what can be added to the game has been hard work that's "also really satisfying", which certainly rings true considering just how many tracks were added to Rock Band 4 post-launch.
"Taking a longer look back, I see the Rock Band DLC catalog as a huge achievement in persistence and commitment - over the years we’ve cleared, authored and released nearly 3,000 songs as DLC and well over 3,000 if you include all the game soundtracks. That’s wild."
As for what comes next for Harmonix, Sussman notes that "looking ahead", the team has been working hard on Fortnite Festival for the last two years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable, with Sussman saying that it's "the place to be". Although it's not specifically noted as the reason why Rock Band 4 support is ending, it does make sense for the studio to move on to supporting its big new release.

Launching five years after Rock Band 3, Rock Band 4 came out at a time when the music/rhythm game craze had largely passed. While it failed to generate nearly as much interest as its predecessors, it did still manage to find some success and a dedicated fanbase.
