While the character customization at the beginning of Skull and Bones is well designed thanks to the water’s reflection and shipwreck environment, it fails to let you see your entire character. You should save your time because there’s a much better character customization waiting for you after the tutorial.
Don’t waste your time making a good-looking character at the beginning of Skull and Bones. You can’t see your hair that well and there’s no way to see your body which is necessary when selecting a body type, tattoos, and scars. Instead, wait for Vanity Atelier which is available after the tutorial.
Your first task is to complete the tutorial. This consists of fighting (and losing) to the British, creating a character (which you shouldn’t spend time on), getting a level one Crowbar, looting the Exeter shipwreck, and sailing to Saint Anne. Once you are in Saint Anne, you can use the true character creation.
In Saint Anne, walk up the docks, around the pirate statue, and into the boutique called Vanity Atelier. The symbol for this shop is a mirror. Once inside, talk to Florentine d’Alesso and select Change Physical Appearance.
Finally, you’ve arrived at the best character creation menu Skull and Bones has to offer. It’s here that you should spend more time with the character creator because you can see your character’s entire body and can spin your character around to getting a better look at them.
Skull and Bone’s character creation isn’t robust or deep when compared to other games, but at least at Vanity Atelier, you can be more confident in your pirate’s appearance. Everyone knows you can’t be an infamous pirate lord looking like a darned fool. Make sure you like what your pirate looks like and then get back out there and see what the deal is with PvP.

I had high expectations for Skull and Bones, anticipating a stellar “AAAA” pirate experience: peg legs, sliders—the whole nine yards. However, my hopes were quickly dashed as I emerged from a botched naval battle, coughing up sand on an unfamiliar island. Surveying my reflection in a broken barrel on the shoreline, I sifted through the limited presets available to customize my pirate avatar.
