Sony has updated the Extra tier of its PlayStation Plus subscription service to add Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, a brand-new, day one release. PlayStation Plus isn't exactly known for its day one releases, especially when compared to Xbox Game Pass, but that doesn't mean that the service is totally without day one games. In fact, numerous day one games have been added to PlayStation Plus over the years.
The monthly free PS Plus games sometimes have day one releases, like back in February when Foamstars was one of the free PS Plus games. More commonly, day one games are added to PS Plus Extra. In fact, a day one game was added to PS Plus Extra earlier in April, as Dave the Diver joined the service on the same day of its PlayStation release. Now yet another day one game is available for PS Plus Extra subscribers to try.
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is available now for PS Plus Extra subscribers to try. The new Metroidvania game has earned somewhat mixed reviews from critics, but it seems as though many are in agreement that its story is a strong point. Tales of Kenzera being available to play through PS Plus Extra means subscribers can try it without making any kind of financial commitment, so it definitely wouldn't hurt to check it out, even if one is put off by the lower-than-expected review scores.
Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is an exception to the rule when it comes to PS Plus Extra. Most of the time, all the new PS Plus Extra games are added on the same day of the month. For April, the PS Plus Extra library update happened on April 16, which is when the bulk of the games, including the aforementioned Dave the Diver, were added. Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is unique in that it was added on its own day, and that, in turn, could help give it more attention among PS Plus subscribers.
It's worth pointing out that Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is also available for PS Plus Premium subscribers to play as well. PS Plus Premium is the highest tier of PlayStation Plus. It gives subscribers access to absolutely everything Sony's subscription service has to offer, which means all of the PS Plus Extra games. Both PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers will have even more games to look forward to next month, but they can keep busy with Tales of Kenzera: ZAU in the meantime.
Developed by Surgent Studios and published by EA, Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a Metroidvania about a shaman who leads souls to the other side. To bring back his father, Zau agrees to hunt down and contain the spirits of three monsters for the God of Death. While the studio has developed projects in other mediums, Tales of Kenzera: Zau is Surgent Studios' first game.

Sony recently added a free trial for one of the most controversial games of 2024 to PlayStation Plus Premium, meaning members of the service can give Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League a shot without having to spend a single extra penny. Though some may have preferred a more well-received game to be added instead, trials like these allow PlayStation Plus players to test out divisive games and make judgments for themselves on titles they may not have touched otherwise.
Unfortunately for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, it seems an additional seven games are leaving the service, bringing the total to a whopping 34 games that are on their way out. PlayStation Plus Extra games are removed on a monthly basis, but 34 is still a lot of games to see go removed all at one time. All 34 games are expected to be removed from the PlayStation Plus Extra tier on Tuesday, May 21.
