A talented artist and Pokemon fan recently showed off a collection of impressive regional variants and evolutions they designed for popular creatures like Xatu, Hoodlay, and Skitty. Starting with 2016’s Pokemon Sun and Moon, new Pokemon generations have been introducing region-specific alternate versions of existing Pokemon that reimagine them as a different elemental type. Some Pokemon even have multiple variants, such as Meowth having a Dark-type one in Alola and a Steel-type one in Galar.
The Pokemon franchise has always been a prime source for fan art, and talented artists have taken full advantage of the potential of regional variants to design new versions of creatures that don’t currently have one. Some of the more notable examples include a Steel/Normal-type Smeargle variant that paints with a rapier-like tail, a Ghost-type Slugma variant that evolves into a Ghost/Rock hybrid Plascargo, and numerous alternate versions of Dunsparce. One artist even created regional variants of a possiblestarter trio for the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
A Reddit user by the handle of SayuriKoopa recently posted artwork of their latest custom Pokemon regional variants and evolutions on r/pokemon to much praise from other fans in the comment section. This assortment includes a Ghost/Flying version of Natu that evolves into a similarly-themed Xatu, Water/Dragon variants of Goomy and its evolved forms Sliggoo and Goodra, a Ghost/Fire evolutionary line for Chinchou and Lanturn, and an ice variant for Skitty and its later evolutionary stage Delcatty (that is renamed Damatty).
SayuriKoopa has designed plenty of other creative Pokemon regional variants in the past, including a Water/Flying version of the classic Gen 1 Pokemon Ponyta, a haunting Grass/Ghost variant of Torterra that replaces the tree on its back with a graveyard, and a Fairy/Fighting version of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Tinkaton that sees it trade its signature hammer for a gigantic boxing glove. They have also designed a Mega Evolution for Lycanroc that combines its three time-based forms into a single, powerful canine.
SayuriKoopa also included a few bonus pictures with their latest collection of custom Pokemon regional variants, such as pixel art for Natu and Xatu, a creepy drawing of Natu in a dark elevator, and images of Chinchou and Lanturn with their lanterns darkened. All of them are as impressive as they are imaginative, offering up a few creative ideas for regional variants in future Pokemon games.
