The popular DC Universe Online MMO is finally coming to the PlayStation 5, and there is new information about the game’s upcoming 2024 content. Developer Dimensional Ink Games and prolific MMO publisher Daybreak Game Company released DC Universe Online for the PS3 and PC way back in 2011, providing comic book fans with a virtual sandbox where they can create their own characters and join forces with iconic DC heroes and villains to complete various missions and side activities.
Over the past several years, DC Universe Online has added countless characters and story campaigns, and has made the jump to later consoles like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It was announced that DC Universe Online would receive visual and technical updates for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S during an investor presentation in 2020, but this upgrade would ultimately be delayed twice. The first time came in 2021, in which the release date for the next-gen version of DC Universe Online was changed to the 2023 holiday season — and this date was eventually bumped back into early 2024.
Now the long-awaited PS5 version of DC Universe Onlineis live, as announced by Dimensional Ink lead producer Kenn «Kendricke» White. DC Universe Online is currently available as a native client on PS5, meaning that players can enjoy an upgraded version of the game they know and love with powerful technical updates and PS5 native features to enhance the gameplay experience. The Xbox Series X/S version of DC Universe Online is still in development, but Dimensional Ink’s included roadmap states that it should be released in 2024’s second quarter.
This roadmap also lists some of the new DC Universe Online episode campaigns planned for the coming year. Episode 47, titled “Brainiac Returns,” will come in May and feature the cybernetic alien conqueror launching an all-out assault on the Hall of Justice and the Hall of Doom — forcing the Justice League and Lex Luthor’s Secret Society to join forces against his latest attack. A new base is also being added in April in the form of the Sunstone Fortress, an outdoor area inspired by Superman’s famous Fortress of Solitude.
The seasonal “Springtime” event is also returning to DC Universe Onlinethis year, and Dimensional Ink is currently working on new in-game rewards for 2024’s Pride Month celebrations and the Summer seasonal event, “The Tides of War.” Episode 48 is also being moved up to an earlier release date, but details are still forthcoming. There is plenty to look forward to in DC Universe Online this year, not the least of which is the game finally getting native support on the PlayStation 5.
