Pikmin might not be the most well-known series produced by Nintendo, but that doesn’t stop its charming array of characters from reaching cult super-stardom. Of course, the Pikmin themselves are front and centre, but following close behind are the adorable Bulborbs. Pikmin 4 continues this trend of Bulborb love, which should come to the surprise of no one.
Nestled within the dank dark of earth lies one of the largest varieties of Bulborb – the matriarch of their entire species – the mighty Empress Bulblax. This creature is massive even when curled up and resting, but when stirred from its slumber it encompasses entire arenas..and we are going to kill it.

The Empress Bulblax appears in the depths of the Kingdom Of The Beasts, a Cave/Sublevel found in the Blossoming Arcadia zone. This cave is actually one of the largest in Pikmin 4 spanning many floors and containing multiple powerful bosses. Empress Bulblax, despite being royalty (and massive) isn’t even the final boss of this Cave. You can find her guarding the exit of Floor 3.
Empress Bulblax has one main form of attack, and that is to use her incredible bulk to crush you. This is done mostly by rolling, and you want to limit how much time you spend at her sides. She will also use this attack if you are behind her, just to make things even more awkward. Finally, she can also eat your Pikmin, so standing in front of her is also not recommended.
Empress Bulblax can end a fight in an instant. Her strength is immense and her attacks come out surprisingly quickly. If you find yourself in the wrong position, you will be punished. Thankfully, Empress Bulblax is asleep when you first encounter her. This makes getting into position much easier.
Before you start your attack you want to get behind her. This can be hard to judge as she is curled up in this state, but we found having our backs to the locked gate yielded great results. Once you are in position, you can prepare your attack.
Empress Bulblax has a weak spot on her rear – we assume this is where Bulborbs are…spawned. Once she has fully unfurled, charge all of your Pikmin at this spot either using Oatchi or the Charging Horn. We also recommend using Ultra Spice to buff your Pikmin’s damage output.
If you have a large enough horde fully buffed with Ultra Spice, you can defeat Empress Bulblax in seconds. If you aren’t able to quickly take her out, recall your Pikmin, wait for her roll attack, and then go in for another charge. Repeat this process until she is dead.
We highly recommend you stay behind her at all times as this will bait out her roll

For us, Bosses are the highlight of Pikmin 4. They offer just enough challenge to test our combat skills, whilst also being large and imposing setpieces. They are visually outstanding, and every boss has to be tackled in a different way if you want to make it out on top.

Pikmin 4 has quite an impressive bestiary. It is full to the brim with interesting enemies, bosses, and hurdles to overcome. What makes it even better is how each enemy has to be tackled in a slightly different way if you want to be successful. Bum rushing isn’t always the course of action, and sometimes, it doesn’t work at all.
Fall Guys is on a good run of crossovers lately. It was only last week that Death Stranding's Sam Bridges was made available as a costume in the free-to-play battle royale title, and it's being quickly followed up by video game royalty. Bandai Namco's iconic arcade hero, Pac-Man, is the latest to join the fun.
Pikmin 4, as is the case with the entire series, is deeply rooted in nature. You spend most of your time exploring the wilds of the world, fighting all manner of nature-based enemies and avoiding all-natural traps. It’s one of the reasons the games are so warm and cosy, and it’s a vibe we absolutely want to continue.
