Not feeling up to venturing out to watch a great new movie? That’s alright: We’ve pulled together our monthly selection of the best thrillers to watch on Netflix to offer you the very best films that’ll have you perched on the edge of your seats.

2023 was an exceptional year for anime. And if the first weeks of 2024 are any indication, audiences can likely expect another great year of terrific shows.

February is coming to a close, and while the leap year makes it a slightly longer one, there’s still just barely enough time to watch all the great movies leaving streaming services at the end of the month.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, the cooperative open-world looter-shooter from Rocksteady Games and the latest installment in the Batman: Arkham series, was released earlier this month to an all-but-unanimously tepid reception.

We’re currently in the midst of the winter season, when the temperatures drop and the night grows darker and longer, clawing away more and more precious minutes of sunlight. It’s the perfect time of the year for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth season of the crime drama anthology starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. This season has already done a lot to differentiate itself from past storylines, with nods to the supernatural interspersed with prominent callbacks to the series’ first season.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season just wrapped up this past December, earning the series its second Anime of the Year nomination at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards after taking home the award back in 2021. The story of Yuuji Itadori, a physically gifted high schooler turned jujutsu sorcerer (think exorcist) in training, has struck a chord among anime fans and discerning critics alike. In her review for Polygon, Chingy Nea went so far as to champion Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season as “the first shonen about modern humanity.”

There’s still exciting new releases on the horizon, including the North American theatrical premiere of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron, Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom starring Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson.

Science fiction, to echo Ursula K. Le Guin, is not predictive, but descriptive. While most science fiction films attempt (and fail) to extrapolate the ideas and concerns of their respective present to predict what the world may look like in the not-so-distant future, these extrapolations ultimately amount to stories that exist in conversation with the hopes and fears of the times in which they were conceived.

Christmas season is in full swing, and with it comes the annual feast of all things yuletide-themed and appropriately festive on streaming. Christmas is a holiday that’s inspired a wealth of enduring comedies about the value of family, community, love, and selflessness during the darkest and coldest time of the year. It’s also spawned no shortage of films that push at the boundaries of those well-worn tropes, twisting their holly-jolly exterior into cerebral and occasionally macabre stories that probe at the very darkness the holiday is meant to fend off.

I have a confession to make: Before this week I, Toussaint Egan, avowed lover of animation and all things dark and spooky, had never seen The Nightmare Before Christmas. I know, this is a shock; I’ll give you a moment to process and collect your jaws from the floor.

If there’s one thing we love here at Polygon, it’s the Halloween season.

Starfield, Bethesda’s latest sci-fi RPG, was finally released this week after nearly a decade of development. That game puts players in the role of the newest recruit of Constellation, an organization of space explorers in 2330 who embark on a mission to uncover the mysteries of the universe.

The time has come: Barbenheimer, the cinematic double-feature event of the summer, is here. Greta Gerwig’s sparkly fantasy comedy-drama Barbie premiering alongside Christopher Nolan’s gravely serious biopic Oppenheimer, about the man responsible for the atomic bomb, has made for one of the strangest (and most exciting) movie weekends in recent memory.
