Riot Games has revealed the official title for its free-to-play, 2D fighter League of Legends spin-off: 2XKO.

The League of Legends fighting game has been re-revealed with a brand-new title, 2XKO, with the developers providing fans with a potential release window for next year. This League of Legends-branded fighting game was first revealed in 2019 as Project L, alongside Legends of Runeterra and the animated Arcane series as a way to expand the IP into different genres and mediums. Among the projects in development at Riot Games, Project L has had a somewhat rocky production.

Project L, Riot's long-gestating fighting game which is focused on 2v2 tag team fights, finally has a real name. It's "2XKO", which is both awkward to type and to say.

The name Project L was always going to be a placeholder, and today, Riot Games revealed the full name of its League of Legends fighting game: 2XKO. I have already mistyped it three times.

The full name of the upcoming League of Legends fighting game has been revealed, and it’s 2XKO. Riot Games unveiled the game’s new identity on social media on Thursday, alongside new social channels on X, formerly known as Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

Riot’s Project L has been causing a stir since its initial announcement in 2021, but four years later we are still waiting for information as integral as its final name. League of Legends fighting game Project L still doesn't have a release date or proper title attached to it, but it won't be long before you have a chance to play it for yourself.

Riot’s fighting game based on the League of Legends franchise, codenamed Project L, will be a 2v2 tag-based fighter with a twist: Players will have the option to control both characters, tagging them in and out as they see fit, or play on a team with another player in four-player (or three-player) matches. Project L’s creators call the system Duo Play, and in a new video, they explain how the mechanic works.

Four years after it was first revealed, Riot's anticipated fighting game Project L looks like it's almost ready to step into the spotlight. The studio dropped a new developer diary and gameplay trailer today showcasing Project L's 2v2 team-based gameplay, and announced that it will be playable at the upcoming Evo 2023 fighting game tournament.

Seven years after Riot acquired developer Radiant Entertainment, and four years after it revealed fighting game Project L among a litany of other spinoffs, the League of Legends fighter will finally be playable next month. 

Riot Games has released a new developer diary and gameplay video for League of Legends-based free-to-play fighting game Project L introducing the duo play system. The company also announced that Project L will have a playable demo at EVO 2023, which will run from August 4 to 6 in at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
