Details about four potential new Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO sets have been leaked online, which are slated to come out later this summer and fall. Sega and LEGO have partnered previously to create elaborate LEGO sets based on Sonic the Hedgehog, the first of these being released at the beginning of 2022. In addition, 2023 saw five new Sonic LEGO sets launched, which featured Sonic, Tails, and Amy.

Sonic Rumble, a new multiplayer Sonic the Hedgehog game, has finally been confirmed following months of leaks and rumors. The past few years have been an exciting time for fans of Sega’s super-fast platforming mascot, with plenty of Sonic the Hedgehog games, tie-in media, and social media events either released or announced. The most recent game was Sonic Dream Team, a mobile spin-off that launched on Apple Arcade in December. Sega has also announced a special “Year of Shadow” campaign, celebrating Sonic the Hedgehog’s dark anti-hero ahead of his big-screen debut later this year.

This partnership continued in 2023 when five new Sonic LEGO sets were launched, which featured Sonic, Tails, and Amy. The momentum is continuing in 2024, with Sega and LEGO collaborating again on the production of three new sets.

Sonic Dream Team's Content Update 2, or Version 1.3, has introduced a host of new content to the game, including a new zone. The last big content drop for the title was released in February.

Sonic Dream Team has released its first post-launch update, fixing boss fights and introducing brand-new mission types. Sonic Dream Team is an Apple Arcade exclusive title that was released in December 2023, developed by Sega HARDlight. While HARDlight was responsible for a number of previous Sonic mobile games, like Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Dash, Dream Team is the first full 3D platformer the studio worked on, featuring six playable characters and 12 levels across four zones.

Yuzo Koshiro and Ancient Corp have stated via Twitter that their modern Genesis/Mega Drive game, Earthion is aiming for release this summer at the earliest. The composer has also announced that plans to bring it to modern consoles are underway.

Sonic the Hedgehog's archenemy, Dr Robotnik (also known as Eggman), will shave his iconic moustache for Movember, Sega has revealed.

The Sonic timeline just got a little messier, with Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka explaining when the latest game takes place. According to Iizuka, Sonic Superstars fits in the timeline just before Sonic Adventure, after the original platformers on Mega Drive.

Every so often, I think of how crazy Sega’s Dreamcast era was. It came out with a huge bang, then fizzled so hard that Sega got out of the console game completely. Given that I still play my Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD, and Dreamcast in my spare time, it’s like it never died: but it did! That’s why it’s so amazingto me that the Sonic franchise has not only endured but is constantly debuting on a system run by its former competitor, Nintendo. All that to say: Sonic Superstars is the main eShop game coming out this week, and will be out on October 17.

The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive received three games from the Valis series. Thus far, I’ve covered Valis, a port of a remake, and Syd of Valis, a bizarre chibi version of Valis II. However, I while I find them somewhat charming, I don’t love them. However, what I’ve been told, both in the comments and on other publications, is that Valis III is where the series actually got good.

Because 30 years ago was the first time Aussies could buy Mortal Kombat on Mega Drive, and then enter ABACABB for the blood code. Speaking of, I'm seeing plenty of great deals on the upcoming reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, right here. I genuinely like how it's breathing fresh new life into the franchise with death.

I never watched the original Gargoyles animated series, but I've been on the internet for long enough to know that it's a cult favourite for being a Disney show with surprisingly dark themes. I also know that its video game adaptation, released in 1995 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, was a 16-bit platformer with a similar appeal to other Disney games of the period like Aladdin and The Lion King.

There aren’t enough games that you can play as a Centaur. Or Centaurides, I guess. Or Centauresses, if you prefer. There aren’t enough games where you play as people with butts that are also horses. I’d have to think very hard to name a single one, which is why it’s unfortunate that it’s taken me so long to find Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder.

I guess Disney isn’t done spelunking through their 16-bit catalog since it just announced the 1995’s Gargoyles Sega Genesis platformer is getting a full remaster. It’s coming to Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 19, 2023.

It's a slow starter, but Disney Illusion Island eventually comes into its own as a polished, breezy multiplayer action platformer.
