Apple Inc. is shutting a 121-person team related to artificial intelligence operations in San Diego, leaving many employees at risk of termination, according to people familiar with the matter. The group, known as Data Operations Annotations, was told Wednesday that they would be relocating to Austin to merge with the Texas portion of the same team, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven't been announced.

AI weather forecasting: As it celebrates 150th year of its establishment, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now set its eyes on fine-tuning its weather forecast models using artificial intelligence (AI) and faster supercomputers even though it struggles to predict small-level severe weather events. In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, are shutting down their highly anticipated news app, Artifact, just shy of its one-year anniversary. Little-known indie platform holder Valve have announced a new policy for Steam releases that make use of "AI" technology. To boil it down, developers will now have to disclose how they're using AI tools on Steam pages, including what "guardrails" they're putting in place for live-generated stuff that might be illegal or infringe on copyright. Valve are also introducing a new player reporting system for breaches. The company say these adjustments "will enable us to release the vast majority of games that use AI", with the exception of Adult Only Sexual content that is generated live.

Steam pages will now disclose which games use AI-generated content.

Genshin Impact and Assassin's Creed developers will begin using Nvidia's brand-new AI-powered technology for NPCs, but Nvidia won't say what the new tech was trained on.

This year's CES event has been utterly dominated by the constant talk and promotion of AI, and Intel's Client Computing keynote meeting was no different. However, executive vice president Michelle Holthaus did say that Intel's next CPU architecture for desktop PCs, codenamed Arrow Lake, is on target to hit the market in the second half of 2024. Oh, and it's the 'world's first gaming processor with an AI accelerator'.

Along with the promise that its next generation Arrow Lake desktop CPUs will be coming to market in the second half of 2024, Intel also announced that another new architecture will arrive this year, too. Lunar Lake will be an evolution of Meteor Lake and, although it's squarely aimed to be as low-power as possible, Intel is also claiming significant improvements to the CPU core's IPC (instruction per cycle) and up to three times more AI performance in the GPU and NPU.

AI is most definitely the buzzword of CES 2024, and it seems that no piece of hardware is immune from the coming integration of a whole host of AI features, some with rather dubious usefulness. However, MSI has been showing off its upcoming MEG 321URX QD-OLED display at its demo suite at the Las Vega show, and its new AI-powered SkySight feature appears to be capable of detecting incoming enemies in League of Legends and giving away their position with an onscreen icon. Call me old-fashioned, but that seems…more than slightly unfair.
