Adam Sandler playing an astronaut on a solo mission to the edge of the solar system in the sci-fi drama “Spaceman,” and Disney 's animated coming-of-age story “Iwájú” set in the future in Lagos, Nigeria, are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.
Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press' entertainment journalists: the video game Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a Paramount documentary revealing how law enforcement has quietly used rap lyrics against defendants for decades and Ridley Scott's “Napoleon” starring Joaquin Phoenix storms Apple TV .
— Ridley Scott's “Napoleon” is finally making its debut on Apple TV on Friday, March 1. The historical epic starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French leader and Vanessa Kirby as his wife Joséphine divided critics upon its release, for its unexpected tone and humor. As AP Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote in his review: “Don't mistake ‘Napoleon' for your average historical epic… Here is a sweeping historical tapestry with a damning, almost satirical portrait at its center. That mix — Scott's spectacle and Phoenix's the-emperor-has-no-clothes performance — makes ‘Napoleon' a rivetingly off-kilter experience.”
— Adam Sandler is Jakob Procházka, an astronaut on a solo mission to the edge of the solar system in the sci-fi drama “Spaceman,” debuting on Netflix on Friday, March 1. Isabella Rossellini is his commanding officer, while Carey Mulligan plays the wife he left behind on earth. And Paul Dano voices an extraterrestrial spider named Hanuš. From director Johan Renck (who helmed all five episodes of HBO's chilling “Chernobyl” series), the film is based on a 2017 novel “Spaceman of Bohemia.”
— For families looking for something new, Peacock Kids has a DreamWorks sequel in “Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate,” streaming Friday, March 1 with Keith Ferguson replacing Will Ferrell as the voice of the reformed villain.
— The Criterion Channel also has an amusing new series (out Friday, March 1) devoted to Razzie Award recipients, including “Heaven's Gate,” “Ishtar,” “Cocktail,” “Showgirls,” and “Gigli,” some of which have turned into beloved classics, and some of which haven't. But that's up to the viewer to decide if, in the case of Elaine May's “Ishtar,” they're still with Roger Ebert, who called it “a truly dreadful film, a lifeless, massive, lumbering exercise in failed comedy” or if they're on the side of fans like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.

Watching Netflix’s cosmic philosophy movie Spaceman, the most obvious question is about the plot: Is that giant alien space spider real, or a hallucination? But the second most obvious question might be Why is Adam Sandler starring in this movie? Sandler has taken on a number of increasingly high-profile dramatic roles since he first surprised his fans and dodged his comedy-career typecasting with Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love back in 2002. But his roles have always been tinged with comedy, even if it’s dark, wry, or despairing comedy. Spaceman is something new: a grim story that doesn’t crack a smile as it sends Sandler into space as Czech astronaut Jakub, a man whose life, relationship, and maybe psyche are all disintegrating during a long solo journey.
Netflix’s new Adam Sandler movie is unique in the Sandman canon: Despite sending the comedic actor to space for an encounter with an oversized alien spider, most of the potentially corny laughs are swapped for melancholic tears. Like Solaris, The Fountain, and Ad Astra before it, director Johan Renck’s Spaceman is a meditative intragalactic drama orbiting around a heartfelt performance from Sandler. It’s not the first movie with the kind of visual effects that demand an actor’s unbridled imagination, but filming Spaceman was a test that took him outside his comfort zone.

There’s an obvious question at the heart of Spaceman, Netflix’s science fiction movie where Adam Sandler’s forlorn astronaut character spends half the story talking to a tennis ball communing with a giant alien spider that he names Hanuš. But even without watching the movie, viewers may wonder: Is Hanuš actually real?
