A new report claims Xbox is aware of the hype surrounding theFallout franchise and is looking to expedite development of its next entry. After the release of the Amazon show, fan interest in the Fallout series has seen a significant boost, with player counts skyrocketing on every platform. Bethesda took advantage of this wave of popularity by releasing Fallout 4's free next-gen update on April 25.
While Fallout 4's native next-gen version offers a host of improvements and content additions, it's still a 9-year-old game at its core. Many fans wonder when Fallout 5 may release, and the truth of the matter is that if it were to be developed by Bethesda, then it may take around 10 more years at the very least. After the release ofStarfield last year, Bethesda shifted its developmental focus toElder Scrolls 6, which was first revealed in 2018 and is still years away from launch. Creative director Todd Howard also confirmed back in 2022 that Fallout 5 is next up after Elder Scrolls 6. Assuming the latter's development progresses on time, and it releases by 2027-2028,Fallout 5 will take another 6–7 years to make. That puts Bethesda and Xbox in a precarious position today, as the series is experiencing a heady dose of popularity, but without a full-fledged new game to enhance it further.
On a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast, credible Microsoft insider Jez Corden outlined this exact problem, and said that Xbox is «aware» of the heightened interest in Fallout, as well as the guaranteed success that the next entry in the franchise will be. But with no current way to cash in on the hype with Fallout 5 and Bethesda being too busy with Elder Scrolls 6, Xbox is apparently considering other means to accelerate development for a newFallout game.
Outsourcing the IP to another developer is seemingly one of Xbox's best bets, says Corden. This would allow for a new Fallout title to be developed in parallel with Elder Scrolls 6, potentially even releasing within a year of each other. This isn't something new for Bethesda, of course, as 2010'sFallout New Vegas was developed by Obsidian and went on to become a fan-favorite in the series. And as it happens, Xbox now owns Obsidian as well, enriching the possibility even further.
However, with Obsidian developing Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, taking on an IP the size of Fallout may not be feasible for it right now. Moreover, Fallout games have always been huge, ambitious experiences that can take hundreds of hours to fully absorb, so no matter which studio potentially ends up with the IP, it will take several years for the game to hit the market. However, Xbox may just be planning ahead by timing the release of the next Fallout title with the TV series' third season.

Xbox president Sarah Bond has confirmed that the company will continue to launch its first-party games, including Activision titles like Call of Duty, on Game Pass. This news comes in the midst of a period of uncertainty over the subscription service, as recent reports claimed that Microsoft was internally debating whether new Call of Duty titles should be launched on Xbox Game Pass.
New information in the Rockstar Games API may suggest an imminent drop of new Grand Theft Auto 6 images. Rockstar first revealed the blockbuster title by way of a trailer back in December 2023, which broke several major viewership records on YouTube. Five months later, fans are clamoring for more news about Grand Theft Auto 6, and their requests could be answered very soon.
For all long as the Fallout franchise has been around, it has never been set outside of the United States. Of course, its over-the-top, retro-futuristic Americana satirization is a core aspect of what makes Fallout, Fallout, but on new few occasions, large chunks of the series’ fanbase have wondered how locations outside of the US are faring in Fallout’s post-apocalyptic setting, and whether they could fare as suitable settings for a future Fallout game.
Fallout 5 won't start development until after The Elder Scrolls 6 launches, so we're a long way off from the next numbered game in the series, but the Amazon show has ignited a newfound hype in the franchise. So, the question is whether a third party will develop a spin-off akin to Obsidian's New Vegas in the meantime.
The next game's protagonist seems like an obvious choice following the success of the Amazon Prime live-action adaptation. The Amazon series followed three main protagonists: Lucy, a naive vault dweller discovering the wasteland for the first time, Maximus, a squire of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Cooper Howard, a former Hollywood actor who mutated into a ghoul after the bombs fell and became a bounty hunter.
The Fallout 4 free next-gen upgrade is now available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, albeit with an odd exclusion. Bethesda rolled out the next-gen update on April 25 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but members of PlayStation Plus who obtained the game through the service found themselves locked out of the update, leading many to purchase Fallout 4 separately to upgrade it to the next-gen version.
The next-gen update for Fallout 4 has broken the popular F4SE mod on PC. Released on April 25, the update brings performance improvements, additional Creation Club content, and more to Fallout 4 amid heightened interest in the franchise thanks to the recently released Amazon TV series, but clearly doesn't gel well with existing mods.
The Fallout craze continues to pay dividends for Bethesda. Earlier this week, the studio announced that Fallout 76 surpassed one million daily players across all platforms for the first time since its launch in late 2018. The multiplayer game is one of the top sellers on Steam (and elsewhere), largely thanks to various promotions and offers that have, however, since ended. On Valve's PC platform, the game reached 73.3K concurrent players last Sunday.
The ongoing success of the Fallout TV show has fuelled renewed interest in the Fallout games ever since it hit Prime Video, and now Bethesda has confirmed just how big an impact it’s made.
Fallout 4 sales have skyrocketed in Europe in the past week, rising over 7,500%. Steam player charts also recently hit more than 160,000 people over a weekend, almost ten years after the game was initially released. The Fallout TV Show on Amazon Prime Video has massively influenced the resurgence of the game, with fans of the show now flocking to play Bethesda's 2015 entry to the franchise.
