Mortal Kombat 1 arrives next week and promises to deliver a satisfying fresh dose of ultraviolence for fans of the long-running fatality-packed fighting series. In addition to a new tag-team mechanic that lets you pair a main character with a backup “Kameo” fighter, you can look forward to an epic all-new story, regular seasonal updates that will add new Invasion mode missions, and more.
While Mortal Kombat 1 adds plenty of new features, the series has also always leaned heavily on nostalgia and holds onto certain old-school elements that you don’t necessarily see that often in video games today. That includes unlockable characters! While there’s only one unlockable core fighter in the game (find out how to get Havik here), there are five Kameo fighters that need to be unlocked – classic versions of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Kung Lao, as well as Shujinko and Motaro. That’s a pretty decent chunk of the overall Kameo roster, as there are only 15 of them total. So, how does one get their hands on these additional Kameo fighters? Scroll on down for the answer…
The additional Kameo fighters are all unlocked by leveling up your Mortal Kombat 1 profile. There are several ways to level up in Mortal Kombat 1, but we’re specifically talking about the level you see attached to your profile card in the upper-left corner of the screen while on the title screen. So, how do you boost your level? Easy – just play the game! You’ll gain XP to boost your level by playing Mortal Kombat 1’s single-player modes or online. The additional Kameo fighters will be unlocked at regular intervals depending on their placement on the character select screen – Scorpion at level 5, Sub-Zero at lvl 10, Kung Lao at lvl 15, and so on.
And there you go! As long as you stick to it, you should have a full Kameo roster before too soon. Go stomp some folks with Motaro.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Switch on September 9, although those who have purchased the premium editions of the game will be able to play tomorrow (September 14). You can check out more of Wccftech’s Mortal Kombat 1 guides here.

Mortal Kombat 1 introduces the Kameo system to the long-running fighting game franchise and it is not just a tacked-on gimmick. The title uses these assist fighters as an integral part of the gameplay, with certain characters completely changing how they play and how they approach a fight depending on who their partner is. Because of how important this system is, it is important to have access to every Kameo Fighter in the game to ensure that you are able to fully experiment with every combination that the game has to offer. There are a total of 15 Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 but only 10 of them are available when you first play the game. You will need to unlock the remaining 5 Kameo Fighters, which consist of returning faces from the franchise’s past and even several playable characters dawning their Klassic attires. This guide will explain to players how to unlock the final 5 Kameo Fighters in Mortal Kombat 1.
With the game out now, the full Mortal Kombat 1 roster has been revealed and it includes 22 playable characters at launch with one more available as DLC.
The most disgusting and memorable part of any fight in is the brutal Fatality, a finishing move that all characters have, but some of these gore-soaked executions need to be unlocked. When you take down your opponent in this game, you have five short seconds to enter a complex input after hearing the announcer. While each fighter and Kameo comes with one finisher available, the rest must be found.

There’s a diverse selection of characters in Mortal Kombat 1 that you can pit against each other to paint the floor red in blood. Sometimes though, doing this on your own can be tricky, which is why the series is introducing Kameo fighters for the very first time.
Six hours into my time with Mortal Kombat 1, I’ve barely scratched the surface — I haven’t battled against a human opponent yet, and I’ve only seen a fraction of its ambitious story mode. But it’s the new Invasions mode that’s stealing most of my time right now, and potentially making me miss my deadline for pre-launch impressions of NetherRealm’s new fighting game.
