Mortal Kombat 1 adds Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Homelander to roster

NetherRealm Studios was one of many developers at EVO 2023 recently, with Mortal Kombat 1 receiving a new trailer for Reptile, Havik and Ashrah. Some hands-on footage with the fighting game is also available – check out lead QA analyst Stephanie Brownback playing as Li-Mei in the Tower for over 10 minutes via IGN.

NetherRealm Studios have shared their Banished trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 at this year’s EVO.

EVO 2023 has kicked off today and will continue throughout the weekend. This is the fighting game tournament if you’re unfamiliar with the event. Players gather to attempt to go through matches from a series of popular fighting games. Those games include everything from Guilty Gear Strive, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, to Mortal Kombat 11. That’s just a brief look at some of the video games featured at the tournament. But between the fights, you might spot a reveal. It looks like Ed Boon has something planned for Mortal Kombat fans at this year’s event.

Ed Boon is seemingly teasing on Twitter (surprise surprise) that Reptile is going to be the next character announced for Mortal Kombat 1 during EVO.

The fighting game genre has many notable franchises. One of the earliest to earn iconic status is Mortal Kombat. It punched its way onto the arcade scene in 1992 and quickly found its way to the home console market, wowing players with at-the-time realistic visuals and controversial over–the–top gore. That controversial content ushered in the now-industry standard ratings system, but Mortal Kombat’s legacy has been defined by much more than that. For over 11 mainline installments, the series built gameplay innovations and an ever-growing roster atop its core 1-on-1 fighting system.

Mortal Kombat fans are waiting on the next major installment to land in the marketplace later this year. However, we’re still in the dark if you’re itching to see the entire roster. But fortunately, NetherRealm Studios has been teasing fans with new character reveals over a series of teasers and trailers. Today, we’re finding out that the roster should contain a total of 24 fighters, according to a new report from Temple of Geek that surfaced online. This publication managed to speak with Dominic Cianciolo, the story director behind the upcoming game at SDCC. 

Mortal Kombat 1, a new start for the long-running and ultra-violent fighting game franchise is set to release in only a few months’ time. Before players get a chance to experience the full game, there will be a beta that will be available for a select number of days with specific roster members to both test the online of the upcoming release and give audiences a chance to learn how to play certain characters. Mortal Kombat 1 has already given fans a lot to get excited about. Whether you're a Mileena stan or a hardcore 3D-era defender, MK1 has something for everyone. Well, as long as you're not a cyber ninja fan. Sektor and Cyrax are in the game, but so far, they're reduced to Kameo fighters, not playable in their own right.

Mortal Kombat 1 is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Sept. 19, but some MK fans will be able to play it a month early, thanks to a four-day beta test coming this August.
