Megan Fox appears to be in her gamer-girl era, and she’s showing no signs of slowing down. The American actress will voice the vampire fighter Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1. On Wednesday, developer NetherRealm Studios released a trailer presenting the character and showcasing Fox’s new role.
Mortal Kombat 1 is the next installment of the iconic fighting game series first released in 1992. The game will introduce a new story and universe, and bring “reimagined” versions of popular Mortal Kombat characters from across games. This includes Nitara, whose new design is based on Fox herself. “It’s cool to be in the game. Because I’m not really just voicing it. It’ll be like, she’s kind of me,” Fox says in the character trailer.
The teaser shows Nitara using her claws, fangs, and aerial abilities to fight her way to a bloody victory. Nitara’s lines also contain nods to Fox’s previous work. In one snippet, we see Nitara facing off against Kung Lao. Prior to their fight, he asks her, “What did you do with Jen’s body?” Fox played the leading role in the 2009 horror film Jennifer’s Body.
The role seems perfectly tailored to Fox for several reasons. For starters, she’s fully embracing being a gamer girl. Fox is pretty nerdy, and has cosplayed Zelda and appeared in the Diablo 4 marketing campaign. Additionally, the role matches up with the public persona she’s cultivated over the years. Playing a vampire in a gory video game makes sense for an actress who openly partook in a ritual where she drank her partner’s blood.
Even so, it sounds like the role still pushed her in certain ways.
“It does force me to tap into areas of myself that I’m not comfortable… I’ve had a lot of fun doing it, and it’s caused me to be more free with myself.”
Mortal Kombat 1 will come to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Sept. 19.

I've loved the recent Mortal Kombat games, but if there's one thing they have not been good at, it's celebrity cameos. From Ronda Rousey as Sonya, to the Dimitri Vegas skin for Sub-Zero, to most recently Megan Fox as Nitara, more often than not the appearance of a famous face in these games means that you're about to be subjected to voice-acting more grisly than the fatalities. So I'm frankly a little horrified to find out that Ed Boon's dream for Mortal Kombat 1 was for all the fighters to be played by different household names.
Some fans aren't happy with how she delivered her lines.
NetherRealm Studios promised a hard reboot of the franchise in Mortal Kombat 1. While it’s clear the characters, story, and environments have all received updates, the developer also keeps what worked in previous games, refusing to tinker with the heart and soul of the title. In many ways, this helps the fighting game feel fresh in the right places but still possesses everything that brought it to the party to begin with. (It’s like experiencing passion fruit with Sprite rather than soda water for the first time.)
We’re on the cusp of the weekend once again, and as is usual for this time of year, there’s a fresh batch of big games that are releasing. From Mortal Kombat 1 and The Crew Motorfest to Trombone Champ on Switch, Super Bomberman R 2 and Dune: Spice Wars, there’s a little bit of something for everyone, it feels like.
The excitement was palpable when Megan Fox was announced to play Nitara in Mortal Kombat 1. It seemed like the perfect pick, especially given her role in Jennifer's Body, but the tide has turned as voice lines and in-game footage have come to light. Now, some fans are going as far as to say her performance is worse than Mortal Kombat 11's Sonya.
It's pretty much expected nowadays for the majority of the big fighting games to have some kind of cross-play support, what with them being primarily multiplayer focused experiences. Street Fighter 6 had crossplay at launch, as will Tekken 8 when that releases next year, but it seems like Mortal Kombat 1 fans will have to wait a little bit before they can go a few rounds with someone on a different platform.

We've had a bunch of Mortal Kombat 1 leaks lately, but this might be the worst one yet. Somehow, a content creator managed to get hold of a copy of the game early, and proceeded to stream himself playing the story mode. Spoilers are being shared online, so watch out for story details if you want to go in blind.
