Mortal Kombat 1's Nitara reveal trailer features a surprising reference to a piece of MK history that many people have probably forgotten about - Mortal Kombat: Conquest.
We're just one short week away from the long-awaited release of Mortal Kombat 1 and, despite the game being so close we can practically smell Scorpion's flaming head, NetherRealm surprisingly hasn't officially revealed every character yet. The third-to-last character revealed was a doozy, however, as not only is Deadly Alliance's Nitara returning after 17 years, but she's also portrayed by Megan Fox this time around.

Nitara's reveal trailer goes hard for many reasons, but there's one smaller moment that includes a reference that might have gone over the head of some fans. I wouldn't blame you if it did, though, as the reference is to something that a lot of series fans possibly aren't even aware of - Mortal Kombat: Conquest.
At one point in the trailer, we see Nitara about to go face-to-face with Kung Lao, which starts some pre-match dialogue between the two. Kung Lao says to Nitara, "What did you do with Jen's body?", which causes Nitara to reply, "Poor Kung Lao, you'll never see her again". That's pretty dark, but it's a layered and interesting reference.
Let's get the obvious one out of the way first - yes, this is very clearly a reference to Jennifer's Body, a horror film from 2009 that stars Megan Fox as a demonically possessed student. It's a fitting in-joke considering Megan Fox is playing Nitara here and has a similar bloodlust, but there's a more interesting side of it for fans of the series.
Although you can take it as a reference to Fox's Jennifer Check (whose name I didn't have to Google, I swear), the use of the name "Jen" can also be taken as a nod to Genevieve "Jen" Reyland from Mortal Kombat: Conquest, a short-lived show from 1998 that was a prequel to the games and followed the life of the Great Kung Lao, instead of the one that we know and love from the games.
Before you start freaking out and thinking that this means that the Kung Lao we see in Mortal Kombat 1 is the "Great" Kung Lao, that's already been debunked with intro dialogue between him and Liu Kang. It's possible that Jen Reyland has been reworked in this timeline as a love interest for Kung Lao, but it's more likely that it's just NetherRealm taking the opportunity to make a fun reference to one of Megan Fox's films and some Mortal Kombat history.
